Could be both low beam bulbs have gone at the same time - easiest place to start looking. (if this is the case, check the output voltage from your alternator - we have a fleet of cheap Jap hatches that are used as delivery cars, they have been known to have the regulator in the alternator fail and allow 30+ volts into the battery. Doesn't take long before the battery dies and the bulbs - particularly the headlights - blow)

Check also that the low beam fuse is making good contact in the fuse holder - crusty contacts can cause all sorts of strange effects!

Burnt contacts in the headlight relay will also cause both low beams to fail - what size bulbs are you using? Stock headlight relays can only handle lower wattage bulbs (around 50W a side), so if the car has been fitted with bulbs that are bigger than that then the relay could be fried.

Let us know what you find - could be a good reference for someone else with the same problem in the future....

Low beam is fuses 3 and 4

Down load wiring diagrams from here - there are a couple that are close

http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html

Power goes to the on/off dimmer switch on the RHS
Power then goes to fuses 3 and 4

My guess is that the switch has fried

If you have a multimeter see is you have juice on the live side
I reckon you wont

If you dont - take the cover strip off your dash and see if you have it up there.

If you are not comfortable - take it to a auto electrician

But download the wiring diagram to make his life easy

Hi

The ceramic fuses used in VWs are very prone to corrosion, the left low beam on my sons car has stopped working twice with a build up of corrosion even after cleaning.

Use a test light, not a multi meter (a multi meter will still show 12 volt at a high resistance connection) to check power at each fuse terminal end, then check power at the bulb connector, wiring is brown = earth, grey = parkers, yellow = low beam & white = high beam.

If you still have high beam its unlikely that the switch is the problem, is the relay clicking.

On L bugs the relay sits underneath the drain tube from the air box

This tube cracks/leaks/whatever and i have had many relays full of water
