Okay, so im halfway through making my new exhaust and for the mean time im just using a bit of short pipe. Its loud i knew it would be but after i rev it i can here the valves going, does this mean they are loose and need adjusting.

I have got two manuals, one is for 40 horse and is by scientific publications and the others is a haynes for a 1200cc.

Are the clearences the same for a 1600.

Also how much oil is gunna be in the valve covers if i take em off or am i better off dropping the oil.

Cheers Josh

all Vw engines should be set at 0.006 if your good at it though you can do them at 0.005
take the covers off and put them under the heads you will get a few drops
(don't do it with the engine running lol)

Okay. well on friday night im gunna put the car on ramps in the driveway and drop the oil, pour some cleaner stuff in and let it sit overnight, saturday morning i will do the valves and fill oil back up, does that sound like a good plan.

And is that measurement in inches or mms.

sounds like a good plan but I have never used the cleaner stuff, fresh oil should do
VW's are metric.

Valve measurement is normally in inches... so you'd say that measurement as 6 thou, for 6 thousands of an inch.

Metric equivalent is something like 0.15mm

Other than that silver is right - almost everything on a Volksy is metric.

The .015mm is assuming that the 1200 is not still fitted with the long rocker studs which mounted in the base of the head.(these studs often became noisy as they wore and became loose in the head) These used bigger clearances of .02 and .03mm,most of these motors have been reworked with the modified rocker studs which then reverts to.015mm clearances.

The same is true for the early Type 3 1500 heads. Most would have mod studs as well if they have survived.
