There is a fill hole on the passenger side, towards the front of the box.
You need to run a hose to the hole and put a funnel on the end of it.
Let gravity do the rest.

it takes around 2 litres..

75w85 or similar HYPOID transmission OIL.... 85w/90

If You buy the oil in CASTROL one litre bottles , they have a long neck etc...
pour some of the oil into another container so its NOT full...

then stick the end of the 1 litre bottle into the hole quickly,
upend the bottle and squeeze... slowly....
keep doing this until the bottle is empty...
If You try with a FULL bottle.. You will spill a lot..

PLUS... If You pour the oil in too fast it will overflow
and You will think that the gearbox IS full....

Once the 2 litres are in.... quickly do up the hex plug...

this IS the way I do it.....

I have tried funnels of all sorts... even made up some funnels

Now if You had a clear piece of plastic pvc hose that will fit over the top of the Castrol 1 litre bottle that would make it even better...

buying one litre bottles of Castrol HYPOID oil is the expensive way to do it... but those bottles are great...
I use one to pour oil into My beetle engine too....
and never spill a drop... lol

There are two other options.... lol

cut a hole in the floor of the chassis over the top of the gearbox fill hole.....
OR
take the gearbox out... Refill and replace... lol

cheers

2.5L and a little tip i learned long time ago remove the filler plug first not the drain plug

if you drain the oil first and the filler plug is seized in there and wont undo your up shitters ditch

Thanks Joel.

I must have bought 3 bottles of 1 litre of CASTROL Synthetic Hypoid oil for My gearbox...

I wouldn't buy it again... too expensive...

cheers

I had the same problem with a Peugeot I once owned, bought an oil pump (like a short thick bycicle pump) suck the oil into the pump then pump it into the gear box, worked a treat, pump didn't last long though, bought it in about 1970, threw it away late last year as it stoped working properly, bloody Jap junk.😀

I have got one of those Donn...

only found it recently...

probably 20+ years old....

they would be good for filling the gearboxes too....

yeah i need to change mine badly, its the old out of sight out of mind thing.
Ive never even checked the level since the gearbox was built in 2001 😊

it was still fairly clean though when i replaced the main seal a month or so ago

much easier job with a container pump

there seems to be mixed opinion on whether to use synthetic or dino in vw boxes Mr B will know whats best though 👍

I'll send you my address, you can post it down so that you won't have to throw it away when it stops working. 😂
BTW there is a smaller version available for lawn mower oil changes, only it is used to suck the old oil out, will still do the same job though just a bit slower due to it's size, also it is made of plastic whereas my old one was steel, threw it away b4 I thought of getting a new plunger bit 4 it.
