Heh yall

Am considering converting my bus from 2 ltr to a type 1 1600, basically because the 2 ltr engine is shot and I have a spare type 1 engine and gearbox. So what I am wondering is if I take the 2ltr box out, will the 1600 kombi box fit straight up, are the CV's different ?

Cheers

Depends on years. I'm not sure exactly which years there were changes, but if the 1600 kombi box is out of a later bay, you should have no troubles fitting it in.
Don;t forget you need the correct tinware to seal the type 1 motor into the kombi engine bay. The motor also needs the mount at the back for the cross bar.
Not sure on the axles sorry.

What year bus do you have?

You will need to lengthen the gearshift linkage by about 10-15mm, its best done on the front piece that can be removed easily from the car.

You will need to use a different starter motor

What are you doing with the old donk ?
I'm looking for a set of 34pdtis carbs or alt a complete efi set ?

Would look at the complete motor if your not asking an arm and leg for it.

Thanks Steve, Yes I will be in need of the tinware. I had been jumping back and forth about a water cooled conversion or keeping it original, but given three of the other toys are T1 powered I will keep things simply for parts and interchange ability.. so I will lock it in Eddie.

Sphincter - sorry didnt have those carbs, it had Webers.

Oh one more thing. The bus has a good 2ltr 091 gearbox in it, and whilst I have a 1600 kombi box (that is supposed to be good but is unknown), I was thinking I may be able to stay with the known 2 ltr but wasnt sure on the gearing. I was thinking I may be able to change the bellhousings over, which would then mean I would use the beetle starter (which I have) and I wouldnt have to modify the linkages etc.

Is this doable, are the input shafts the same ? If not I will just swap the boxes and lengthen the shaft.

Thanks again

I don't think the 1600 will like the 091 ratios. You'll need a 1600 box unless you increase the hp of the 1600.

Marcus (Vassey66T1) is needing a known 091 and he has a good 1600, maybe a deal can be made?

You can swap the bellhousing over, but will need to change the input shaft as well..... but as Matt said, the 1600 engine will struggle

1800 box only if it's a very strong 1600, sorta like an 1800 🙂
