Bugger,
Have the motor in pieces for a clean up, but have no idea how to remove the flex plate?
Any tricks on how to stop the crank turning to undo the nut?
I can't see that the mount holes for the torque converter line up with anything that you can shove a bolt in them.
Same applies to remove the fan from the crank.

I pulled out my old clamp/hook but it only works on a manual flywheel.

I'm planning to install an auto motor onto a manual GB.
Cheers,

Factory tool uses the case and TQ conv holes to lock the crank.
I used a pr of sof jaws in the 6" vice, sat the crank in there,
and it un-did easily.

Hiya Andy,

I'm an AutoStick guy and I have no experience with Type 3 equipment, so take the following suggestions with a grain of salt................

An old AutoStick trick to locking the crank is pretty simple and should work for you. Pull one of your spark plugs. Into that combustion chamber stuff a length of soft cotton rope. Be sure to leave a piece of it hanging out so you can remove it later. Now, simply rotate the crank until that piston can compress the rope no further and you will have locked your crank.

Once you have the gland nut removed you'll need to get the flexplate off the crank. Take a hard look at the holes in the flexplate just outside of the central hole for the gland nut. If two of those are threaded (as they are on AutoStick flexplates) all you need do is insert bolts in each hole and tighten them down in an alternating fashion. The bolts will thread through the flexplate and bear against the crank face forcing the flexplate off.

make up a bar / plate that you can bolt through and lock against the ground to undo the bolt
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

While this works a treat with a flywheel, I'm thinking that you'd run a serious risk of warping the flexplate by going that route.

Hi

Ive built quiet a few semi auto motors, I always used an old type 1 front pulley with a big lump of steel bolted to it to lock it up.

So how did you get the motor apart with the fan still on or did I misread that?

Do the rope down the plughole trick.Any undue force on the flexplate will ruin the flexplate.

Cheers,
I might see if I can make a plate similar to what dangerous suggests. Not keen on the cotton idea. Yes, warping the flex plate is a worry!!
Sorry if my post was a little confusing, no I don't have the fan off yet either!
Oh, and by apart I'm only taking it back to a long block for cleaning up. The motor ran OK, and compression was fine, so I'm just re-building carbs, dissy and replacing what seals I can in addition to giving everything a good clean and paint.

Just an update, made a plate with spacers to tie the flex plate to the case (GB mount hole). Worked fine for fan and flex plate.
Cheers.
