you willo need the body no.under the back seat and the engine no on the case near dizzy,a recipt of sale with these details from the seller his details and yours and if it has rego the papers if no rego the sticker numer,
the more info you can get the better i also include the colour, and the main plate should be behind the spare we are assuming it's a bug
good luck

It's the chassis number under the back seat on the tunnel (not the body number), and for a 1964 Beetle it will be a 7-digit number somewhere between 5677119 and 6502399. They were just simple consecutive numbers in those days. If the chassis number you see is NOT in that range, let us know what it is and we'll track it down for you.
The engine number (below the generator stand) for a 1964 Beetle will likewise just be a 7-digit number, with no letters in front of it. It doesn't have to be the same as the chassis number.
The ID plate is mounted on the body behind the spare tyre, but for a 1964 Beetle won't tell you much except the chassis number (this should match your chassis number under the back seat, so long as no one has swapped the body!), and a few weight limits. It will look like my old one shown here.
If you are very lucky the Beetle might have a little sticker with a Dulux paint code on it, somewhere near the ID plate or the spare tyre, but it will probably be long gone. There was never any info on the trim colours - you are thinking of modern cars there!
Thank you all for your help. much appreciated. I will post pics of the car as I restore it so you can all see what she is like. Cheers Gary

Ok thanks for that.I was told it was a 64,never mind. Can you tell what size the motor is by the engine number? if not how can I tell? do I have to pull it apart to tell? How do I know if it is a 6 volt or a 12 volt? No battery in it at the moment. Cheers Gary

The '197' at the start of your chassis number tells you that it is an Australian-built 1967 Beetle. The third digit is the year, while the 9 means Australia. The 1 means Type 1 Beetle. A European or US/spec Beetle of the same age would have '117' instead. In fact that '9' often blows the mind of Americans who can't find references to it on their web pages or in their books!
There are other places you can check for production date stamps. Look on the back of the speedo (from the front boot). Look at the wheel centres, in between the hubcap clips. Unscrew the front blinker chrome covers on the mudguards and look underneath.
The car would have been 6V originally but conversions to 12V were common.
Interesting, I've never seen a 6-volt style Aussie car with factory 12V. I know the '67 Deluxe was made until March '68, so maybe it was the last builds before the '68 models went on sale. I bet Clayton was something of a shambles at that time.
