Australian T2 Kombis were not fitted with hydraulic tappets.

We didn't see them until the upgraded air-cooled motor on the T3 Kombi in 1982, which had a number of other improvements such as different lifters and pushrods, and sodium exhaust valves in redesigned heads with square exhaust ports.

It's possible to use parts from this motor in the earlier Type 4 motors with a complete rebuild, but it's more realistic to find a used T3 Kombi motor and use that.

As above and if your trying to adjust them and having trouble, you'll know if they're hydraulic, it'll be hard to get feel on the feeler gauge as the lifter gets soft without the engine running to give oil pressure.
You can fit the hydraulic setup to any type IV, but I use the late T3 rocker assembly and pushrods. The pushrods are shorter and steel and the rockers use different thrust setup.

its not not overly old ,seems to have had a rebuild in 1991 from all papers ,and other little things like a number on the oil cooler and a 184 number on the front cover
this all started when it developed a put put noise from the exhaust on idel so i thought it may be a valve that not closing

Hi

Automatic T2s had hydraulic lifters. There was usually a yellow sticker on the fan housing with a picture of a tappet with an X through it.

Any Type IV engine that has the 'GE' prefix on the engine number is (or was) fitted with hydraulic tappets. These engines were available in Australian Kombis.

Unfortunately in the past many of them were rebuilt with solid (manual tappets) for some incredible reason - Sadly the GE engine that is currently in my '78 Bay has been converted to manual tappets.

Hydraulic tappets are able to be fitted to any Type IV engine case - but you need the hydraulic compatible cam to go with them, so a complete rebuild is necessary. Well worth it if you need to go in this direction.

My new engine (2.3 litre) for my '78 will be fitted with hydraulic tappets as that removes one more thing from the 'needs to be adjusted regularly' list. The case I am using for the new engine was originally a manual tappet 2 litre motor.

Hi

They use the same tappets in WBX motors, I had them in my old bug with a WBX motor, they worked great, my only issue with them was the bleed down if the car was started and stopped and started again.

I still have a new set of Rhoads lifters http://www.rhoadslifters.com/ to suit a WBX or Type 4 motor.

Yes the GE engine had hydraulic tappets, but these were not introduced until 1978, on the last few batches of fully-imported German-made Kombis. VW only sold 1,476 Kombis in 1978 in Australia, and just 558 in 1979 (who knows how many of these were autos?). Compare this with 6,198 in total in 1976.

Earlier Australian-made Kombis (CJ engine) did not have hydraulic tappets, auto or manual.

You can read more about VW hydraulic lifters at http://www.ratwell.com/technical/HydraulicLifters.html
