So I broke down today and called NRMA to help me out. Problem turned out to be the clutch cable was frayed. He equated it to "if there are 50 threads you're down to about 20 threads on the cable."
Long story short, he managed to do a make-shift fix-up and i putted it home about 15km with five gear changed 😀
My big question is...
a) how much are clutch cables?
b) is it an DIY job?
c) how much roughly (and I know it changed from place to place) is a ball park figure if I took it up to the mechanic to get it fixed?
Cheers and Beers,
Ollie

cable $30
easy do it your self (takes a while the first time)
mechanic would have it done in an hour
Ollie,
If my 61 model is the same, I probably have my old one here it you want it. But as hellbugged says, if they are only about $30 best to buy a new one.

I thought rebuilding a VW would be cheap - Shit I was wrong, just don't let the wife know !!!!

Thanks for the offer mate 🙂 I've called a mechanic and he said he can do it, but he'll have to cut a hole in the tunnel to reach it- is this going to be the case? Or will a more vw trained mechanic be able to fix it no problems?

no you don't need to cut a hole in the tunnel!
Wont have to cut a hole, I fixed it in my buggy with a length of stainless cable and a small d clamp and I know FA about these things. Fix it through the opening in the tunnel alongside the peddels, you will need to remove the cover, if you have a fax I can fax the page out of the manual for you tomorrow. But if we knew where you were someone local could probably help you quicker, were the bloody hell are you!
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

There are two different clutch cables for Beetles - 6V ones have a short shank at the pedal end, while 12V ones have a longer shank. This is the metal end with the loop that fits over the tang on the clutch pedal. The reason it is different is that the metal tube the cable goes through was shortened slightly in the 12V cars. Both cables work fine in 12V cars, but if you use a 12V cable in a 6V car, the longer shank will hit the end of the clutch tube when you press the pedal - you'll hear a 'click' every time.
Buy your new cable from a VW shop such as Vintage (9789 1777) and tell them your chassis number / year model so you get the right cable.
Fitting it is fiddly and time consuming the first time you do it, but follow a good workshop manual and you'll be fine. The Gregory's / Scientific manual is probably best as it was produced in Australia and will describe the procedure for RHD cars. US/Euro manuals like Bentley, Haynes etc are for LHD cars and the pedal cluster is different. Good luck!
30 bucks.....should get bowden tube and a new wing nut as well for that.

not that hard to do yourself just a little longer the first time.have a read of a workshop manual before starting .
No need to cut the tunnel.
My daughter and i did it in three hours.
Its a pain the first time , but i think i can do it in half the time 2 nd time around.
Get a small cable tie and tie the cable to the peg before you reassemble .
The moment there is any slack it pops straight off and you have to go fishing again.
So secure it with a cable tie , no matter what happens whilst your under the car and what ever the pedal decides to do your safely hooked on.😎
