If you are new to VWs (welcome!), you should first take the time to learn about your VW - how to service it, tune it, repair it and look after it - before thinking about modifying it. Go buy a good VW workshop manual (Haynes, Bentley, Gregory's, Clymer etc) and read it through.

Lowering the rear is a fairly involved procedure to get right and involves a risk of injury. You need a spirit level and a bubble protractor. And only a SLIGHT lowering does any good - the arse on the ground look won't make the car run better and will in fact eventually stuff the wheel bearings (they are lubricated by gearbox oil running down the axles - which wont happen if they point UP). You can also ground the engine and body on driveways and speed humps, and the tyres will rub if someone sits in the back seat. At least it's only an adjustment and can be put back.

Best to take it to a VW workshop and have them do it for you.

Other than that it's a pretty safe task...

Just fill your engine compartment with concrete.

I havent done it but once i get rims im gunna, i would suggest that you get a laptop if you havent its not nesciary. Take it out the back with the how to on lowering the rear and allow ages like stupid amounts of time so you dont rush it. Get the right tools and follow the how to step by step. Take your time and be careful, whats the worst that happens, you get to a point thats tricky and dont feel safe going on do hat youve done in reverse and its all stock and need a hand .

I've got a feeling that you know just enough to get into trouble, and not quite enough to get out of it, Josh.

A good way to learn is by experience, but be very careful. Safety First!

Cheers, Greg
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Better still, take the wheels off.
