Hi
I am have 1966 1300 type 1. For a while now when I have tried to start then engine there will be quite an awful noise from what I assume is the starter motor.
The car doesn't actually start or engine kick over, there is just a loud grinding noise.
This used to happen rarely but has been happening more often recently to the point that sometimes I will need to try and start the engine several times before the noise stops and the engine will actually kick and start.
Not being much of a mechanic, but wanting to try and fix this myself, I was wondering if I needed a new starter motor or if this just meant some bits needed cleaning or replaciing.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks
it sound like you will need a ring gear as well as the star removing the starter and have a look at the ring gear
and go from there

I had the same problem in my 1600. my options were:
option 1
replace starter gear and flywheel with new or better cond stuff : don't have money
option 2
replace the flywheel : don't have money
option 3
screw buying new stuff. this shouldn't cost money!
dropped the engine, buy a triangle file and file the flywheel teeth (on the end where it was mushed)
do this for every tooth : total cost $8 for a file
off course i went with option 3 and i haven't heard a grinding since
although some might say in a high rev engine the flywheel would needs re-balance
but my power band ends at 4500 so i'll stick with my $8 on a file
note: this was on a 72 1600. I have no experience on earlier stuff. hope this helps
cheers
I feel your pain!
Our 67 does this all the time...something to do with the car being 12v and running the 6v starter. Not got round to sorting it yet as it always starts in the end....sometimes takes 8 or 9 goes though!
I was recommended the file on the flywheel too, and as it's the cheaper option it's what i will try first.
Might be worth replacing the starter bushing too....as sometimes that can be the cause.
Also worth noting that if you remove the starter motor (2 bolts) then you can get to the flywheel teeth without having to remove the engine. It will be a bit more fiddly doing it this way, but possibly worth a go if you've not got the tools / space / know-how to remove the engine.
its from people converting to 12 volt and leaving the 6volt starter
the starter itself will be fine as long as u dont crank it for extended periods but the solenoid really wants swapping out for a 12 volt one to stop it pulling in to fast
