Howdy all, A while back i had my crank, case re built. they ground the cam. Back when this was done about 1.5 years ago the guy told me the standard bearings on the con rods should be fine. However i just put the rods on the cam and torqued it up to 24 and i seem to have quite a bit of movement (when i pull on the rod or push on it as if a piston were firing), is this normal?

(Common sense is telling me i should have got some oversize rod bearings)

Thanks all in advance,

try the rods mounted on the CRANKSHAFT 😉........should be much better there 👍

seriously tho, not a good sign

Haha, you beat me to it Damo 😂

eraser, do you have a micrometer handy at all to check the rod journals on the crank?

Yeah i dont think a micrometer issue 😉 more like a millimeter issue.

Here is a quick video ( )

Would you say it is a safe assumption that they ground the crank and gave me the correct oversize bearings for the case, that i would need the same size bearings for the conrods?

BTW yes thats what i didnt say crank shaft 😉 my bad

Looks like you need to put the bearing shells into the conrod big end before you put it onto the crankshaft. To make sure you have the right size bearings, measure the journal.

Assembling any engine requires a lot of measuring.
Not just to make sure you have the correct size of bearings,
but also that the machinist has done the correct job,
and also that the resulting clearances are within the VW specifications.

You can't assume what bearings will be correct. The crank has been reground and the bigend journals could have ended up a diffderent size to the main journals....you need to measure them. Take the crank to an engineering shop and find out what size it is. The bearings go in steps of .25mm so you need to be quite accurate at least to get the correct bearings. To check the quality of the machining you need to be able to measure a LOT more accurately, like to .0001". That's a tenth of a thou.

Thanks for the help guys.. here is a vid of how it should have looked 😉

Turned out it was down the the correct first grind 😀 so those bearings worked :P

P.S now im just waiting on the new engine hardware kit to tighten the case down :P
