I have been having problems getting my beetle to run.
It was runing fine with a standard carbie but I had a 28/36 dcd weber that was jetted to suit a 1600 laying around so I decided to install it and that is where my problems started.
The only way I can get it to start now is nearly flood it then it start rev then die.
I tried a 32/36 dgav and had similar problems.
I have run out of ideas, other than going back to a standard carbie so any advice or info would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers
Mike

sounds like a blcoked or restricted fuel line i would start at the front fuel line and tank.pull the hose of the bottom of the tank and see if it's flowing than replace all rubber fuel lines
i suspect that with the smaller carb i wanted less fuel but bigger carb can't get what it needs
good luck and remender no short cuts fuel line is bloody cheap

It seems as though plenty of fuel is going through the line because I took the intake line off the fuel pump and a lot of fuel poured out.
Could it be that the fuel pump doesn't put out enough fuel?

to find out remove the lead from the coil so it wonyt start than take the fuel line of the carby get someone to turn the key and see how much fuel is pumped out
or when did you change your plugs and points and condensor that especialy if still no go go out in the dark and start her up and look i9n the engine bay if therte is a short you will see it
only other thing i can think of is the carbys being out of synk
good luck
just had a though try and run 1 side with out the other find a screw or bolt and block of one carby and see if one side or the other is playing around🤪

I tried an electric fuel pump today and it didn't really make a difference, it will now start a bit easier but it doesn't want to idle still and it will occasionally rev and die by itself by the way I forgot to mention that I'm running a single weber.

The rev and die sounds like an air leak somewhere in the intake manifold. What wcondition was the carb base gasket? Manifold boots?? You must have changed the manifold so did the endcastings seal to the heads properly?

Should there be a gasket between the manifold and the heads? It seems to be an intermediate problem as it doesn't happen all the time but tomorrow I will have to check how well the carbie is sealed to the manifold

Yes definately gaskets to the head or a real good sealer and spotless , flat surfaces on head and manifold.

Well it looks like I'm going to have to reseal the manifolds because I'm pretty sure there aren't any gaskets in there. I was hoping to never have to undo those 13mm nuts on the front of the monifolds😂

Well today I have made a bit of progress.
First up I checked to see if enough fuel was being pushed out by the fuel pump.
Next up I swaped the 32/36 dgav for the 28/36 dcd and tightened everything up and made sure no unwanted air was getting in.
I have stopped the reving and stalling now but it still won't idle properly and sounds like its running out of fuel.
I know its probably something stupid but I can't seem to hit the nail on the head.

By the way thanks to everyone for the imput so far.

Cheers

it sound like air is getting in try with a with a can of start ya bastard or mortene fly spray and with the engine running spray around the manafolds if there is a inlet leaak the engine will rev up
happy hunting and put gaskets on the head manafold meeting seat i did a job for a friend he was having a problem very much like yours, turned out to be one of the mana folds for some reason the hole that alines the manafold would not fit it kept the manafold just a fanny hair from seating tight we redrilled the hole in the manafold no more problems
and these mans came of the car

it all seems pretty airtight but when I go out again I'll get some aero start or something.
Could there be an air leak through the exhaust preheater, or the lack there of?

It seems to be fixed now.
I took everything apart again, cleaned and resealed it all.
Now all I need to do is get a hold of a new filter element for my ramflow filter and I'll be all set.
