Is censorship a good thing?

I thought freedom of speech was a civil right in Australia.

Censorship IMO is a deprivation of liberty.

How do others feel about this subject?

We may as well talk about this crap because obviously racing Volkswagens for cash is such a controversial topic it will only get deleted or locked.

I get a feeling this thread is just gonna get closed or deleted.😵‍💫

I treat threads like tv shows. If i don't like it I don't look at it.

I believe we should be able to express our thoughts and points of view freely. If I say something then I have the consequences to deal with, just like in the big wide world.

Big brother is too keen these days to shut anything and everything down. Too much dictatorship power goes to some peoples heads.

I can't comment on the thread in hand as I didn't read it.

But if you don't like something don't go running and complaining. Move on to something you do like.

Personal attacks are little different, and need to be addressed differently.

it was i that locked the other thread and i can honestly say that it all came down to one posters attitude as to why it happened. the question was asked at to why and an answer was given. everyone else didnt need to put in there 2 bucks on it.

as bug boy says! i agree.

but how much "freedom" do aussies really enjoy?
compaired to the UK very little,
and you are closer to a dictatorship than you think with compulsary voting. a democrasy is based on people doing what they want, not what they are told to do.

before anyone jumps up n down and says "FO we're full" etc, pull your head in and think of an origional answer. nothings perfect but we all know ways of making it better, i think its about time certain aussies opened their minds and actually listened to whats being said!

here's 1 thing for a start, in the UK theres a book which applies to ALL road vehicles, its black and white, in WA i can take my car to 6 different pits stations and get 6 totally different results. the cops in the UK cannot pull a vehicle off the road unless it it obviously dangerous, getting a yellow sticker cos the ash tray is full (fire hazard) is almost beyond belief!! come on guys lets all start swimming in the same direction!!

Good response Matt, couldn't have said it better.
My nappy is not knotted, it is just very annoying to have lost a very stimulating, interesting, relevant and obviously controversial thread. I don't remember any personal or defamatory attacks. As for legal issues, wouldn't it be the person posting held accountable as was previously discussed in another thread.

If the moderators have issues, why don't they clean up the thread , that's what I've seen in the past, deleting the whole thread everyone looses the information totally and nobody learns what the problem was anyway. The thread in question was very interesting and topical. Maybe it was a forum sponsor that got his nappy twisted and influenced the mod.

and if its the original post that the whole threads based on is the problem???
how do you propose to clean that up???
from my understanding its was suspended for a legal reason exactly the same as i would for a thread that asks for someone to sell them a chassis or engine number

The reason the thread was suspended was two fold.

1. The racing wasn't under ANDRA supervision, scrutineering or rules. That's just plain stupid and should have been a red flag to the quarter mile regulars.
2. The thread was full of argy bargy - this is usually enough to get a thread suspended or deleted by itself.

I've sent these exact reasons to the original poster. The OP can create their own forum if they like - several folks have over a long period of time - that's the freedom of speech in this country. I can't stop nor would I care if the original poster did that. But one of the reasons AVDS has flourished is our light handed moderation that comes down hard on argy bargy between members.

The main point of contention is from one of the folks who reported this thread to me is that the OP coletrickle is essentially promoting an race that is not affiliated with their event at all, and wouldn't be unless a discussion could take place about appropriate safety levels, funding, insurance, scrutineering, etc. As these discussions have not taken place, the race will not take place as far as the event organizers are concerned.

I've sent details to the OP about what he or she needs to do to publicize their race here:

A) Appropriate safety rules and scrutineering must take place. I think this should be under ANDRA auspices as it's a drag race. Everyone else manages it, so I'm a bit disheartened about the laissez faire making rules up as they go.
B) The race must be booked and scheduled. I don't particularly care about which event or track they do it at, but it must not be a surprise to the event's organizers.

This stuff is not hard and if they can meet these very basic requirements I'm sure coletrickle can advertize their race here again as there's definitely an interest in that type of thing.

The number of threads suspended over the last twelve months is less than 50 out of several thousand threads - mostly buying and selling for missing critical elements such as price or similar. I think considering how much folks really love to use their free speech here that this is an excellent result.

But please, don't let facts get in the way of righteous indignation.

thanks,
Andrew

Freedom of speech is a right, however when that something being spoken of is of an irresponsible nature, or that it does not fall under the correct racing guidelines, then it must be bought into line.

If the conversation in question was on a hot rod forum, the creator would be well hauled over the coals by ANDRA. These rules are in place to save racers and spectators alike.

I dont come on here that much cause Im more a watercooled guy , but I do like my drag racing which most of the watercooled guys dont like so Im stuck between a rock and a hard place

I can see in some light why the post was deleted . But , I must say that there was probably a reason for the post . In the Warwick/Portland series there is a category for street cars . There is a trophy and prize money . There is no clear set of rules for this category . I beleive a discussion is in order . Cole may have jumped the gun a little with trying to create a series in a series but if we step back and look at the bigger picture we need to lay down some rules . Now Mr Vanderaj you may call it argy bargy but its going to be the only way to define whats acceptable and whats not . I myself want to compete against other street air cooled cars in a fair and even competition with rules we both agree on . The last Gene Berg trophy was the only time I did this and Im keen for it to be brought back . Right now watercooled cars are few and far between on the dragstrip and I dont think its really going to change . If you can come up with a better solution Id like to hear it . If you cant then I dont think its such a wise idea to delete a whole thread because of a few technicalities . I suggest you modify some posts and bring it back up

Thanks
Seb

Thanks guy's for the responses. Now I understand what happened and why and that all makes sense. The thing that I was annoyed with was that the idea of Col's was just that, some responses assumed it was somehow event and soon organisers get on the defencive. Col is a mate of mine and the first I heard of this was here on this forum, and as the thread developed so did the idea's of racing cars. The debate is just that, and surely Andrew, cant you put forward the angle that you brought to light and I'm sure Cols idea would soon have developed into something more appropriate.
I as a contributor to the thread was keen to see where the street car argument was going and when the thread disappeared felt that we were being over ruled. And I have to agree with Bug racer, I didn't see any argy bargy, but maybe that came later??? I still don't know so I haven't been able to learn where that limit may be....it's like driving a car or tightening a bolt...you have to find the limit now and then to know when to back off.🙂

Hey everybody,Crazy Col here,I understand that C**** organizer of an "event whose name may not be spoken" is upset with me although i did appoligise for the points he pointed out very early in the thread and also tried to tackle the points frosty and rod penrose brought up.If that was or wasn't enough to more clearly explain what i was tring to do in respect with fast registered cars racing on the1/4 or 1/8th miles then nothing more was said either as a post or a pm. or any contact from moderators or the people concerned,I'm pretty sure if anybody wanted to contact me they could have if they felt that strongly about it.I did not know the thread was deleted until saturday nite when i got a message from frosty.I understand the moderators need to keep an eye on things to make sure things don't get out of hand but i've got to wonder if there isn't something other than the points given by the moderator that led to the thread being deleted. As for my event/race at no time did i say anything of the kind(although some keyboard warrior may have said something like that)As For promoting an event i wasn't and in reality i was probably trying to create intrest in C***** event be it people building a car(i know of 2 cars being built for something like i was alluding to) or people attending the"event whose name may not be spoken"to see some fast street cars in action. So i really don't think the reasons given hold any merrit as i said after my appology nothing more was said on the thread except discussion on "rules"and as of friday nite thats what people were starting to do have a discussion about where to draw the line re rules i don't recall any agro as of friday nite so although agro should not be tollerated deleting the thread does nothing to deter the agro postings to stop because you go all agro on a thread and the only response is to delete the thread no mention of any action being taken as to the agro posters. I get the impression that the action being taken here is a case of an organ grinder and the monkey.Because to have a discussion you need more than 1 person doing the talking, you can list all the reasons you want but at the end of the day you must involve the other party if you want a solution to a problem. The old it's my bat and ball and i'm going home may work when you are 10 but presumably we are all adults here and livley discussion should be welcome here.Any way lets see how things go we may get event promoters getting out and activly seeking ideas from competitors spectators etc as to what they want to see or how to make the events better. Thanks for you time Crazy Col

Well i'm confused. I've been that busy I missed the deleted thread.

Only thing I can add is the use of paragraphs. Must have read some of Col's lines twice.
