Hi Guys
Does anyone have the wiring and number cross reference for the head light switch. The wiring diagrams I have list the wire colours but not to which terminal number they go to.

if the light switch is above the radio then its a 1300 standard bug
all the 71 on bugs used the same switch and wiring
like matt said
30 - is the main power in which is a big red
X - thats black with yellow trace it comes from the ignition switch, so that the headlights turn off when the engine does and only the parkers stay on
56 - is headlight power down to the highbeam relay usually white
58 - is the parkers usually grey
58b - speedo lights, grey with red trace i think
might be off on some of the colours, havent touched a flat screen headlight switch in years
Hi Guys
Ok, now half way there.
If the headlight switch does park, low and high, how does the switch work? One pull out is park, last pull out is Low beam, Does this then switch to the switch on the steering coloumn. Its starting to get complicated.
Ok, If we go back to the start.
The headlight switch, has two positions when you pull it, also has the dimmer built in so you rotate the knob.
The first pull - Is that meant to activate the park lights only
The second Pull- Is that the Low beam activate.
This switch I have has the following
x 12 VOLT FROM ign
30 12 VOLT FROM bat
56
58
58L
58R
On the first pull, all terminals have power except for 58, so I presume, 56, 58L and 58R are park lights, dash lights.
On the second pull 58 is powered so I presume thats Low Beam.
So that means no High Beam on the switch and high beam is activate from the Steering cloumn switch.
Is that correct or do I have the wrong switch.
First pull is park, second is h/lights, the dip is done by the indicator stalk by pulling towards the wheel. It triggers the h/light relay to flash by the trigger wire to earth contact in the indicator switch. This will also flash the light when ign on and light sw off.
As for your 2nd post above doesn't sound right. Have you a h/light relay installed and wired. Must go back to workshop now.

yeah double check that
cos on first pull you should only have power at the 58 terminals
the 58L and 58R is part of the euro city light system so just leave them empty
should also be a half width terminal marked 58b for the dashlights
Delete everything I have talked about
I see where i was going wrong, VW has a special relay activated by the brown wire from the dim switch, I have been trying to wire it up with a couple of bosch relays. Will still do that but they will be activated by the high low wires coming out of the VW headlight relay.
Thanks for the help guys
