Ive got an issue which is starting to annoy me given that its been raining on the "Sunshine" coast for the last 4 or 5 days.
recently (the last year or so) my baja has developed the nasty habit of not starting after heavy or consistant rainfall. The engine turns over and usually splutters a bit but sometimes not even that. but it wont start. i thought it was something earthing in the wet but ive rewired my car over the last day or 2 and today it wont start again.
Ive taken the dissy cap off but the points are dry.
The only thing i can think of is that i used to run Silicone core 9mm HIPO leads and now have a set of stock leads on the car. are these more prone to water issues?
the car always starts fine after some sunshine but i want to be able to get to work in the rain too (lucky im on holidays)
any ideas?

Plug leads shouldn't make any difference as long as they're clean. If it is cranking ok (the same dry or wet) I'd also look at the coil, location, cleanliness, connections. Also top of dissy cap...VERY CLEAN for all the HT stuff.

all electrical connections are top notch as its all brand new. the engine cranks the same wet or dry. ill pull the HT leads off the Dissy and Coil and have a look today.
thanks matt

Nick i used to have the same drama years ago with my bug if it sat out in rain for hours
points would look fine but i'd have to hit them with a shot of WD40 before it would fire
electronic ignition fixed that problem
yep the inside of the dizzy iyt only takes a bit of mist to screw it all up in the old days when mini's were the go the old plastic bag over the dizzy did the trick
so wd40 after it warms up do the bag thing
👍👍😂🙅🥷😬🤓
I had this problem with my beetle. I too thought that every thing was dry & couldnt work out why it was doing what it was doing. Turns out my duistributor cap was porous & was absorbing water when it rained. discovered it at night time when the distributor cap put on a pretty good lightning show. electricity was tracking all over the cap due to the water it had absorbed. Changed the cap & the problem has never returned.
Try running the engine in the dark & looking for places where its arcing out.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

ah yea the old mini, rubber glove over the dis cap works well to
wasnt that classic design fk up, dissy directly behind the grille with no splash guard 🙄
mum had 1275 mini back in the early 80s when i was a kid, apperently dad used to keep packs of rubber gloves in the glovebox.....ha!
well i swapped out the dissy cap and the car fired straight away. so i think maybe the porus dissy cap idea might be a winner. we shall see......i really should get an elec ignition some time soon

👍👍😂🙅🥷😬🤓
ive got a mate from school with a mini and he doesnt drive it in the wet so il tell him that trick.
soaked dizzy cap or tracking in the cap, have had that prob before. what sort of air cleaner are u running ? is it possible for water to sit on top and leak into the carb? we had that problem on an off road buggy once ....
cheers Todd 😀
i run a Pod filter, but it sits well under the rear scoop behind the number plate so very little if any water could get into it. it also has a rubber cap.
71-beetle-sedan - ive heard many old mini drivers complain of trouble in the wet. i beleive it was mostly due to water actually getting into the dissy and sitting in the points rather than the dissy cap.
