Thank you for your email
I've included some general information for importing goods into Australia, which I trust you will find useful.
You will be required to lodge a formal Customs import declaration as the value is above AU$1000, and to pay the calculated duty and taxes. Car parts generally attract 5% duty and 10% GST
Formal import declarations can be lodged either electronically or by document as follows:
· Electronic lodgement: obtain a digital certificate in order to communicate with Customs' electronic systems to complete a formal import declaration or engage the services of a customs broker (listed in the Yellow Pages); or
· Documentary lodgement: go to the nearest Customs office and present the necessary completed documentation (B319 and B650) including shipping documents, invoices and evidence of identity.
To work out how the taxes are calculated here is an example of goods classified as having a Duty rate of 5% valued at AU$2000.00 which has been shipped (imported) to Australia at a cost of AU$100.00
1. Customs Value (goods value) = $2000.00
2. Customs Duty Rate of 5% = $100.00 (Payable)
3. Shipping Costs = $100.00
4. Value for GST (1+2+3) = $2200.00
5. GST 10% x $2200.00 = $220.00 (Payable)
Total Payable to Australian Customs (Duty + GST) = $320.00
Goods arriving through the postal system that are worth over AU$1000 per consignment or are alcohol/tobacco products will attract duty and GST and require the completion of an import declaration.
Your consignment will be held at the Customs mail handling facility pending completion of this paperwork and payment of duty and GST. You will be advised by mail that Customs are holding your consignment, and the letter you receive from Customs will contain the required paperwork for you to complete. After you have faxed back the completed paperwork and paid the calculated duty and GST your goods will be released from Customs. Your goods will then be delivered as normal by Australia Post.
Cost recovery charges apply for processing of Import Declarations. The cost will depend on whether the declaration is lodged electronically or as a documentary (manual) declaration at a Customs office. As a guide these costs are approximately AU$50-70 and is payable in addition to the assessed taxes for the consignment.
