To all the mechanically minded here....has anyone seen/done or heard of drilling and tapping the rocker arm where the adjusting screw fits in and fitting a locking grub screw instead of having to use the OEM locking nut on the adjusting screw?

It was something that I was just wondering about and if it would be easy to do. It would surely make the adjustment of the gap much more precise and very easy.

I suppose it has been thought of before and dismissed..but I am just curious as to the possibility.

aftermarket tappet screws are usually hex socket head to adjust instead of a screw driver
is this what you mean ??
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

There certainly is the possibility to do so, but there is not much of a sense in it...
1. it won't make adjustment any more precise..
2. grub screw would be max. M4 and would weaken the socket,
3. torque on grub screw would damage the thread on adjusting screw and limit the adjustments ..
4. limited torque on grub screw...unreliable...if overdone, socket may crack...

😊just my opinion...😀

Ye what do you mean, do you mean like the CHEV posi lock system or the Yella Terra system. But I think I know what you mean, I adjust valves about 5 times a day but all ours are allen key screws with a 12 point nut as the locker. This is a much much better system.

This picture isnt clear, but the adjuster is hollow with an allen key inside, over that is a 12 point. That thing sits at 7500 rpm all day on the dyno and doesnt give a problem.

No Dave, what I am alluding to is...can the end of the rocker arm be drilled and tapped to accept a grub screw to actually lock the adjusting tappet screw.
Can the OEM lock 'nut' be gotten rid of and have just a small high tensile grub screw positioned at 90 degrees to the tappet screw axis thereby locking the thread.
The 'screw driver slotted' tappet screw can stay the same...just the way of actually locking it ...is what I am curious about.

wouldn't that ruin the tappet screw threads?

VW rocker arms are a very hard material, so you would need to use tungsten drills and taps to do it.

I find the VW locking system perfectly adequate if the threads are clean and oiled,
and the condition of the nuts and threads is good.(flat faces and no dings)

as per above the arms are tough material

If u added a grub screw to lock it would cut into the tappet screw thread and cause it to bind next time you tried to adjust the tappets

dont think it would be a good idea
