I ran one on a standard 1600 - 44IDF. It was a pig. Iced up and fuel inefficient. Really need a very good method to heat manifold. In my opinion it's not worth the hassle for a bolt on upgrade, better to go with twins.
I run a single 40DCNF on our 74L Bug. Been told its on a 2lt approx but havn't had it pulled down to check actual size. Keep the revs up and its fine but do some idling and slow driving for a while and eventually fouls the plugs, especially in no 3. Running hotter plugs helped alot. I suppose it would all depend on jetting really.
All in all not too bad if jetted properly I suppose but I intend to go twins when $$ allow.

I ran a single 40 DCNF on a mild 1776 that I had.
It ran well. The only part that was a compromise was that it ran a bit fatter on the idle to accomodate the length of the flow to the heads.
If you can go twins it is that much better that you wouldn't consider going single again. The twin carbs gave me better down low, better up high, and better idle.
Having said that, it was still a blast to run in either form.
cheers

Cheers Guys, it would be to go on 1300 SP that i'm pepping up a bit for motorsport, and was really just thinking aloud, but it sounds like the twin carbs are the go!

i ran a 40mm DCN on a 1600 for a while with electric manifold heater and it was 100x better than with my kadrons
nice topend improvment and fuel economy was no different to stock unless you drove like it was stolen
manidfold heat is the key, without it will be a dog to drive no matter what u do
you normally go bigger carby if you have bigger valves to get extra fuel in.🤪
what would joel know he drives a ricer car now.😂
😂🤪😂🤪😂
car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

Sounds like your on a budget,if you don't already have a weber save your cash.I've got a set of type three carbs on a 1641 at the moment had to even out the jets and airs made up a couple of spacers to clear the corners of the late fan shroud you don't need them if you have a 36hp style shroud. With flogged out throtle shafts and bunnings ram tubes(PVC pipe) it's a ripper my ass dyno says its way better than any stocker. On a stock 1500sp with extractors this set up ran an indicated 90mph 3up!T 3 carbs are pretty cheap at any volksy shop that does hotties some of the shops i've been to will sell them 2 you buy the kilo they have that many and laugh as they take your money😂I'm going over to a single carb shortly but thats a secret!
oh and it needs a little work rebush and a kit or two
and jets are way off for a 1300
no joke this is 4 real cuz
