Hi all
I have a semi auto which is fantastic, but it seems to be popping out of 2nd (high gear) when it is under load e.g. travelling up hills. Has anyone had the same problem? If so would it be caused by the gear selector bushes or would it be internal issues in the gear box?

Cheers

Unfortunately the oil level is good, I just checked it and with the car level a small amount of oil dribbled out of the fill plug.
I checked the shifter rubber bush connecting to the gear box it is deteriorated but I don't believe it would cause the problem.

If anyone knows of a good transmission rebuilder in QLD please let me know.

Cheers

Hiya flux,

As with its manual cousin the popping out of gear by an AutoStick can be a sign that the tranny internals are giving up the ghost. Allow me to ask.........can you specify the engine conditions under which the popout occurs? High RPM or are you lugging it uphill?

There are other possibilities under which you may experience a popout. I have always had a hard time finding the "sweet spot" whenever I have messed with the shift lever. Right now I have fairly good shift lever movement but it does have a distinct tendency to pop out of Reverse (this is especially true when it's cold). I would definitely try tweaking the position of your shift lever a bit and see if this seems to make any difference.

Then too, I'd look at how your shift couploer is lining up the shift rod and the hockey stick. A loose coupler just might not be getting all the way into gear. And along that same line of thought check your front tranny mounts to be sure that the nose of the transmission has not slipped down and somewhat out of line.

All of this you should do before even thinking of a transmission rebuild. If you can find the source of your problem outside of the transmission case it will be a much easier and cheaper experience for you. And on that note, please do realize that a qualified mechanic with the needed parts for an AutoStick rebuild is quite likely not to exist. You need to contact 68 AutoBug (Lee) or ctefah (Sean) for more information on AS rebuilders in Oz.
