I've been driving the 2L bus daily to and from work, around 130 km round trip. It is almost all rural roads, and I sit around 90 km/h in the 100 zones. She is a stock 2L microbus, and I get around 10L/100km in fuel efficiency.
I can't help but think I should get a lighter, more fuel efficient runabout.
So, how economical can I get with a stock beetle or type 3?
I am keen to restore another air cooled, and this sounds like a good excuse, though it would have to be a lot better than 10L/100km to make it worthwhile.

The type 3 isn't much better than that with a stock 1600.
DH
When i take my 75L 1916 Dellorto'd bug to Bathurst and back i get about 7.5-8L/100kms
What you are getting out of the kombi is pretty good.
I had a Mk4 1600 golf and got 10L/100 in city bumper to bumper or on the open road
Get a 1300 SP iin an earlt beetle s you want real economy
Futue te ipsum!!!
yeah but frugal isn't always as much fun... but in all honesty the 1300 SP does alright on fuel, long trips it gets down to around 6.5L/100km I think I worked out a while back

I get 100km/8L in my 1600 Dp with ict's.I am not driving like a nanna and thats a mix of Hway and city driving. I guess thats about normal economy for a 1600 Beetle when your sinking the boot in.
The two more litres/100km your using is, what, about $2.70 more expensive/ 100km. Your only paying about $18 more at the pump than me to travel the same distance in your working week. Thats about $850 /year.
Yeah thats a good excuse as any to buy a another VW me thinks.
10 L /100 km is not to bad for a 2-litre Kombi. Mine does a little worse than that, because it lives mostly in Sydney traffic and it's an auto.
My old 40-hp 1200 Beetle used to get around 9 L/100 km in town and as little as 6 L/100 km on country trips. The 2-litre Mk3 Golf auto I drive now does about the same, with three times as much power and in much greater comfort. That's technological development for you.
Yes for good economy, stick to a 1200 or 1300 Beetle, but a 1500 will be only slightly less economical and has a better power reserve and is a little more modern.
Considering your Kombi, has a carby, short gear ratios, and is shaped like a box.
10 litres/100km, sounds pretty good.
