How can i tell if ive blown a ring, my car blows blue smoke on start up and then again while i give it some gas to get it to idle right and then it goes away.
i read somewhwere that if i take my oil cap off and if i can feel air flowing out then its a ring gone?
I can feel a fair bit of air, like more then i would expect.
Is there anyother way to check whats wrong?
Josh
U need to get a compression check done
remove the spark plugs and fit a pressure gauge to each cyclinder one at a time spin the engine over and it will give u a reading of say 125 lbs or so if ther all even then now worries
If one is say 50lbs then u have problems with the valves of rings only an engine strip will tell
Can you squirt a little oil through the spark plug hole on these VW engines to check if its either rings or valves
ill try get hold of a comp tester trough the week, i wanna get my car running right for wakefield.
check 4 oil deposits on the spark plugs too see if its 1 or more cyls that have a problem
Does it "tick" when it runs?

It is as it is - If you didnt enjoy today, you've missed the opportunity.
Josh are you sure its blue smoke and not white ???
Auto oil from the trans can some times be sucked into the engine down the vacuum lines and it burns with a whitesmoke but u would probally see it all the time on acceleration
best off getting a compression check done
Yeah it ticks,
and yeaah its blue
but i will get a comp test done this week. My footy coach is a mechanic so can borrow his tools.
