Hi
I have something like that [slightly different shape] on My 1500 single port engine... with two hoses going to an external oil cooler...

that looks like a remote oil cooler adaptor....

although it has non genuine type of seals... clear?

just bolts onto the engine where the doghouse oil cooler goes on later model engines..
or 1500 beetle engines using adaptor type seals..

I don't have any pics here as I'm in Adelaide at present...

cheers

that fits where the vw oil cooler is so you can run a after market oil cooler not really useful unless your running a big engine

It fits under the standard cooler so that you can run an extra cooler or filter

I have used one of these years ago and yes it worked well, but you have to cut your tinwear to get the pipes through. I used it for a remote filter.

Never run these unless the cooler has a thermofan on it. Otherwise there is nothing cooling your oil when the vehicle is running and sitting stationary. EG at traffic lights.

If you said I was a Volkswagen man, you'd be right.

Quite right....

I am using a similar oil cooler to this one with My engine lid open at the top.. OK for winter but not for the summer..
I will be placing the oil cooler under My car shortly..
with electric fans..

From what I understand (as limited as that is) the bypass in the photo above should not be used.
Reason being is that with the additional cooling capacity of an external cooler cracking can occur on the vw case due to temperature differential. This cracking will mean unstoppable leaking...

Food for thought anyway.

Now thats a STUPID place to put the oil cooler, not only are you blocking the airflow you're also heating up the air before it try's to cool down the motor !🤪
