I have just had my transmission rebuilt (stock) on my 68 type 1. Can anybody recommend an oil to fill it with.

Make sure the car is level when doing this. If the right side is lower than the left, and you fill it till it comes out the filler hole, it will be overfilled and you will be renewing your axle seals.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is!

Why not go by the book and put 2.5 measured litres of oil in it as per VW instructions! Just a thought. 👍

That did occur to me, but I was more interested in what brands people use. My manual calls up Castrol Hypoy SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil.

Is this still available or is there an alternative?

dont worry about the brand

any brand will do just make sure it stinks like whales use rubber gloves as its a buggar to get the stink of yr hands

I think you will find that if the box if filled till it runs out the hole you have the 2.5 liters

Yes you can still buy Castrol and yes it does stink. When I refill my gearbox I use a small relatively cheap manual pump (from Autobarn). Makes life a little easier as there is no easy way you can pour straight from the container.
