Hi guys just wanting a bit of advice so that I can help my grandmother. She has just handed in her license and has no use for her van that she bought from VW new in 77 (with paperwork).

She owns a 77' Kombi, 75000 km, auto. Parked in a carpeted garage its whole life so has no rust and vibrant original paint. It has always been in top condition and serviced by VW specialist. In the last few years since her driving has got a bit worse she has scrapped the side a bit in a shopping center and some douche pinched the badge off the front.

It has only plywood floor in rear since new and has never been changed around.

What i am asking is what would be the best method of her selling it? Is it a bus an enthusiast would be after? Is it 'vintage' enough? Or is it best to put it up on carsales or ebay ect? Oh it is in Brisbane Southside. Am going to see her tomorrow so I can get a pic of it if it makes a huge difference.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Enthusiasts are always interested in original unrestored vehicles in good condition, whatever model they are. I don't think the method of advertising really matters, as long as you set a good price which you are happy with and then give a reasonable description of it then the buyers will find you. Any chance of some photos? Sounds like an ideal buy for someone looking for a panelvan Kombi. The only minor problem that you may have is that a windowless panelvan isn't exactly ideal for an enthusiast owner, as most people will either want seats or a camper. On the other hand though, decent original panelvans are perhaps even rarer than the bus/camper body types.

Thanks for the replies.

And thanks for that link pod.

So it isn't something that is particularly rare as such given its condition, and it would reach the right market through ebay?

Oh it has windows all round and just a plywood ramp and floor in the back for my uncles wheelchair to get in and out. I think it would have to be the most unmolested Kombi you have ever seen.

I just don't want her to get taken for a ride as i was under the impression they are worth a bit these days.

Just sell it on carsales or drive.com
you will only get what the market is for them at the current time.

I had a chat with my gran last night, had a look at her kombi and got some pics for you guys. I took them at night and in her garage so they aren't that great quality. I got some copies of some of the original sale document I thought you guys might be interested to see. I wish rego still cost that much🥲

She is going to sell it with the help of my father in coming weeks (or sooner) and I just am helping them make sure they get the right market for it. He is going to take some professional pics for her.

Also I wanted to ask a question about the shopping centre scrape down the bottom side. I have attached a pic. She has insurance to get it fixed before she puts it up for sale but I wanted to ask you guys if it would devalue it by having it repaired at a smash repairer as it has otherwise never been touched. Is it a antique kind of deal? ie better left untouched?

It is in better condition than I remembered, the paint is amazing for its age, the engine bay looks like that of a five year old car. I got the kays wrong too, only 70,400 on the clock.

Do you guys think $17 000 would be achievable?

What are the forum rules for selling things can I put a link to carsales ect. in this thread when they put it up for sale?

I reckon get it repaired. Looks like a great kombi, cant see any rust in the usual spots and the original books will add some interest. A 77 kombi doesnt have anywhere near as much classic appeal as the split windows, or even the 68-72's though. I dont reckon you'll get $17,000. An outside chance if an Englishman decides to take it, but not if it stays on Terra Australis. But, ya never know huh. I reckon its an ebay job. Put it up on there and publicise it on all the VW forums. Put it up with your absolute minimum sale price and be happy with what you get. With auctions you dont usually get a higher bid if it passes in under reserve and you relist it. (actually a proven theory with houses) If it gets relisted people instinctively think there is something wrong with it.

No chance at getting $17K mate. Probably worth somewhere between the $10K-$14K in my opinion. Yes, I agree it is in amazing condition for it's age, but it's only a late bay.
Panel damage will still cost the new owner around $1000.
There's no back seats which are very hard to find especially in good nic.
It's only a tin top and folks are generally after pop top camper conversions.
Standard model not a deluxe which may fetch the $$$ you're after.

Don't mean to sound negative but you need to be realistic. However it is your Kombi so gat it out there for whatever $$ you want and see how it goes. Just remember, if you advertise it high and it doesn't sell then the vehicle will become stale in the markets eyes and people will start to question why it's still for sale. Go in with the right price and a good ad with lots of pics and hope for the best.

Good luck

It looks like a transporter not a micro bus, thats why theres no seats ??? its hard to see but it looks like it doesnt have a full head trim or the peices down the pillars like micro busses.

Hey Mate.

Very good looking condition. SAdly, no chance of 17,000 in my opinion. It's not "rare" pe se, but it is getting harder to find them.

"I think it would have to be the most unmolested Kombi you have ever seen." - ah... it's not... but if you keep it and go to some shows, you'll see what i mean. 🙂

Those last few replies were exactly what I was after - thanks guys.

I am suprised that the more desirable vans are the pop tops , but that is the sort of info I was after. I will advise her to get the damage fixed then too. It does seem to be a fairly commercial model as the interior is fairly minimal - but still factory apart from the stereo. I forgot I had a pic of that.

I only pulled the 17k figure from the guide that was linked earlier. Ill advise them to start off a bit lower than that going by your comments.

i dont know about this pop top camper bit posted above ,but a lot of us kombi owners prefer ours without a great hole cut in the roof but going on some of the prices 10 - 14k dosent sound to bad to me either👍

You never mentioned it was an auto. 🥲 Just dropped another $2K

On the plus side the interior looks amazing. Can't believe how good those seats look.

he said it was an auto straight up.

I'd say 10k is a fair price considering the repairs. Take it to the nationals and put a 4 sale sign on it. Even with those kays, that's about what it's worth.

Surely a kombi of this quality is not easy to come by, and I agree that campers are not necessarily the most sort after.

I'd be taking it to a big VW show to sell, like the Sydney Nationals coming up soon, maybe >15k if your lucky, this quality doesn't come up too often.

I'm going to disagree guys. A camper is definitely worth more than a stock transporter. If it was a microbus or a deluxe microbus I might see your argument, but at the end of the day it's just a bare shell.

mate your pop hasd given you a future bank account if you keep it and
just do minor repairs and don't change anything
it will be money in the bank ,it looks pretty honest so will only gain value as
time goes buy ,and as an a
lot some don't like them but there are a lot who do and auto's are getting thin on the ground
in short keep it and enjoy it and just grin because opo sure was good to you

id say 12500.00, auto is becoming rare, if you fix the panel damage and put seats in it then maybe 15000.00,nice bus, personally you should keep it and let it go up somemore in value over the years maybe, make sure you drive it around the block once a month otherwise it will just go to shit😎

not true. most campers have been modifyied and cost more to revert.

People who want a transporter will pay more.

i would buy it without getting the damage repaired before someone goes and slaps bog into it, getting that damage fixed will not add any value.

THanks for all the advise guys!

Like I said a few times in here this isn't my van and I dont have the room, money or inclination to purchase it. Im just trying to help my grandmother out. It is definatly getting sold.

I do appreciate how cool the kombi is though, they alwys put a smile on your face when they go past.

I'll post a link up in this thread when it is up for sale in case any of you are interested.
