Hi all,
I've just aquired my grandfathers 60model beetle. I've been told about an avalible rebuilt 1800 Beetle engine.
Will it fit strait in??
Probably a silly question

As long as the 1800 is a type 1 and not a kombi type 4 engine it should slip straight in.

1800 t4 will bolt up but you will need to convert the cooling system to upright.

Well it's (1800) in a beetle now but I've no idea what year yet aparently it's had fire but prior to the fire it had an engine rebuild so it's come and take out all that I need. I'm not sure what I need as my 60 hasn't been started scince 2001 & although I know it's the original engine I also know it's been around the block a bit & had the tappet cover fall off (before he died Jack reconed someone stole it 😁) so it not going to be in great nic.

The '60 should have a 6 volt flywheel and starter, but the 1800 (1600 modified) will probably have a 12 volt flywheel so on installation you may need to clearance the bell housing for the larger diameter flywheel and replace the starter with a 12 volt one and fit an adapter bush for the different starter, and of course convert the car to 12 volt if it isn't already. Also there are two types of clutch so that will need investigating...none too difficult though.

The transmission compatability depends on what his car is and what do you want and how much work are you prepared to do or even $$ to spend????

Well I went & had a look at the donna car yesterday. (need to do a compresion test yet) It appears to be a 1970ish beetle stock motor. (stock air cleaner) 12V geni etc. So what is on offer is the entire floor pan of this disk brake car. the owner only wants the body for another project. So should/can I jack up the 60 shell & drop it on the 70 Pan. or just drop the engine, starter & geni 12v stuff etc. I'm not sure I like the later wheels they don't "look" like beetle wheels but then again disk brakes carn't be a bad thing. Anyway what do you guys recon. I'll post som pics of both vehicls in the next week or so. (when I figure out how to 🙂 )
Cheers.
PS is either front end better for lowering.

Bump!(I know I shouldn't do that)
But I'm going over to do a compression test on this thing this W/end & the bloke will want to talk $/time /when I'm going to pick it up. So looking for some feed back about what I do with the chasis & running gear to use it of chuck/sell it. Should I keep the 6stud wheels or just put my 60 body on the 70 chassis? (if this can be done)
Cheers.Paul

For a daily, you can't beat the later running gear, the disc's are a good proportion of that. Yes the early bod can go on the later pan with minimal modification, but to come off and go on again with minimal fuss it needs to be very rust free. I would base my decision on the condition/quality of the car/pan. Rust is the biggest pita to fix, mechanicals are more straight foward. By the way, early car has 5 stud wheels, late has 4. 🙂

Thnks for the info Matt.
For a daily it's good point. I was concidering a "Herbie" as it close to hte right year (and already biegh) or some 60's rod/custom thing. My Kids 5&9 are pretty impressed with Herbie movies & customs. It's only destined to be a very ocasional use car & possibly destined limited use rego. I only have it as I was my grandfather's (there are way cheaper ways to get 1960 bugs).
Do the 4WD(d for drums) work reasonably for an 1800. Desisions decisions........
The body is pretty rust free b ut but lots of dings & bings. The chassis seems good taken off the road by elecctrical fire not long after engine reuild, seems like a good thing. From cars I've seen the really cool ones mostly have older style wheels. Be nice to have the retro looks & modern brakes & suspention. I guesss you carn't have it all. (can you?)

You can have anything if you put your mind to it ....(read throw enough $$$ at it).

Dings are heaps easier to fix than rust. I'm more of a fan for disc's, and there are many ways to go about getting them.

Well I finally gothe driver's door open on the 60 (it's been stuck for quite a while) anyway on removal of all the crap from inside it apears the floor are perfect, near enough to, if you don't count the two foot of heavy chain my granfather WELDED to the drivers floor as an anti theft device.
But the damage to the B pillar & rear seat back mount on the drivers side is going to take some fixing.
Cheers Paul
