Hi all,
Been thinking about turboing my baja. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated in case I go ahead with it. Currently running a 1600 that I was told has 1800 barrels etc. Also have aftermarket carby can't remember the type atm though.

for doing any off road fun i would go supercharger as the torque is on tap from stop to flatout no special rev to get boost and bloody easy to fit,an a 1600 just loves it, any bigger and you start using expensive bits, joal did a good direction write up on this site
do a search blowing the bug

cheap s/c's, then ebay is ur partner.

AMR300's and 500's are small, but from smiley's reports, do make a huge difference. you could only get a small boost out of them, but are always far cheaper than the toyota superchargers.

avg cost for sc14/sc12 ranges from $250 to $500. with the occasional 'bargain'.

Eaton M45 superchargers off the new BMW mini's are something worth considering too, with second hand cheapies popping up now and then. 2 sold on ebay couple months back for $150, (catch, one had bad bearings, other was involved in an engine bay fire). being a later model, spares like seal kits and bearings should be readily available one would assume.

Bigger superchargers are your M90, but that would be too hardcore for a 1600/1800.

M45's have less displacement compared to the sc series, but maybe they compensate by having abilities for higher revs (you will have to check). but they would be awesome.

if you get a small enough turbo charger, you could minimise lag heaps, and you only need a tiny one for a 1600cc. Turbo manifolds can be bought prepared and ready for offroad and street vw applications if you have the dosh. These guys sell the complete kit and will separate. (includes turbo, carb, manifold, zorst, bpv or bov. www.vwturbokits.com

They aren't cheap. If you want a carb that you can turbo or supercharge prep, you can go through tehse guys for a holley, however over ebay there is an italian weber mob who can sell turbo prepped, reconditioned weber ida carbs (larst tiem i checked). If you search via google, there was a guy in the states who modded his solex stock carb (34 pict carb off 1600) and he has a build thread over a few forums stating step by step what he did with the solex carb, just google him up, he put the setup on his bug, rekons he got 80hp at teh wheels or sumfin i think in his stock internals 1600. That would be ur cheapst, financially conservative option option. otherwise, go to www.cgbmotorsport.net to buy some tested 2nd hand turbo solex DIS carbs from the later renault 5 GT turbo. They used these carbs since 85 to 91 that incorporate a blow through turbo setup, allowing these little cars a great 0 to 100kph in 6.7seconds. they are turbo prepped ,ready to go. they use a 1400cc engine, and i have bought two for $85 pounds each (tested and working by the wrecking yard in the uk), think it was $165 AUD each, and plan to run duals on adapted type 3 dual manifolds with a supercharger blowing through. Tuning will be interesting, you can't buy new needles for these, its a solder and drill job i been told. But they have turbo enrichment circuits etc and sealing for the boost pressures all stock inbuilt.

These carbs aren't hack jobs, but factory ready to go items, with same ID as the type 3 dual carbies, but stud pattern is slighly wider (hence why they need to be adapted to the type 3 manifolds). thats if you want to run dual carb. makes it alot simpler if you have single.

Difficult part about supercharger is the mounting, and modding for a pulley. Difficult part about the turbo is the zorst plumbing. Just got to figure out what ur better at doing i guess.

Agree with Greedy, unless you go with a tiny turbo that can spool with a bird fart a turbo would be uselss off road,
A blower will give that low down lag free torque you need for low speed offroading

my old setup would have been ideal off road

best source i had for them were the toyota forums
i got a few of mine through twincam and mr2 forums

Thanks Bajachris some great ideas there.
Joel what was your old setup?
I'm ok whith either option I don't care about ball tearing performance just want to add some more hp and think that forced induction would go well. I do like the idea of a supercharger as they can get a great sound to them when they wind up.

Mines fine offroad, at low speed and high, it tackles the hills and thick mudflats, the rough 4wd tracks and comes out smiling( most of the time 😂 )

Do what ever makes you happy, or just buy mine and go play 🤪

Been doing research and had an idea. Interested to see what everyone thinks.
Thought I might buy a cheap turbo rip off the exhuast end, modify shaft, and add a pulley to convert it into a supercharger.
Would love some opinions on this.

how awesome is that! i never thought of that. yea, you can mod the shaft on the exhaust side to fit a pulley. it would be like a centrifugal super charger but $1500 less lol.

I spose the only concern is how the bearings will cope with the perpendicular pull of the belt, but hey, if u find a common turbo with cheap rebuild kits, then it won't matter. a serpentine belt i spose wouldn't need as much tension as a 'v' or ribbed belt. It'll be worth the experiment. Pulley size would have to be very small with chunky at the crank for the right revs, because they go a little more ape then the s/c 🙂

Was there ever a turbocharger that didn't require oil lines plumbed in? Or thats something else thats going to have the happen? Be awesome if you could go to a bearing shop and find some hardcore strength sealed bearings with the same 'geometry' as the originals so you could press in.

This is a really awesome concept though, seeing you can get second hand turbo's for $50... old subaru ones are as common as an edens landing bogan 👍, and nissan siliver turbo's as well. 👍 Give it a go mate. I'm excited to see a build thread! Think of the space saving!

Whilst I'm all for creative thinking if it were that simple everyone would be doing it

If you have the parts and time give it a go

but you will find it wont start making boost till about the time a VW engine runs outta revs
the main issue is turbine RPM
have a look at diagrams of a roots and screw type blowers vs a centrifugal blower and you'll notice the first two have huge surface area with the lobes compared to the turbine in a centrifugal blower.

turbos can typically spin upto 100,000rpm and a cent blower whilst may look the same has a slightly different turbine and spin slower to make more boost at lower RPMs

can you imagine the belt/pulley arrangement it would take to spin a turbo over at even just 50,000rpm

you'll notice alot of the cent blowers like vortechs and prochargers have internal gearing to help speed them up

which is where roots blowers shine, the make big boost at low rpms
That blower setup of mine was geared almost 1:1 and on a little vw engine that only revved to 5500rpm could make 10psi

ah you spoil sport Joel 😂
But it still doesn't seem too difficult just need a deeper backing plate to fit a couple of gears I guess. Still like the idea as a project sometime.

still have it, just lacking vw hardware to run it on 😂
Gidday joel
Had time tonight to look through your thread. Awsome stuff and quite informative. Only problem is I want the performance now and it just won't happen without the hard work. Thanks for all your advice on this site, really appreciated. Wish I had seen your setup while it was still going.
Did you ever get the water injection happening?
Also if I modify a turbo which I am still thinking of doing as it would be smaller when compared to some supers, would having it mounted after the carby effect the operation of the turbo. It seems it would be easier than before the carby as I think I would have to modify the carby for the pressures.

Finally saw a thread on your baja. It looks great but I bought mine as a cheapy to work on. Admittedly there are times when I regret it and just wish it was all done. but then where's the fun in that, hey. Couldn't get a good look at what you were running, but obviously water cooled. What have you put in it?

That's cause a turbo suits your driving style. If you're not doing a 100mph you're not happy 😂
