Hey guys.

Well looking into buying a type 3 atm and curious about a few things.

1st up is what year did they change the front indicators from the nice clear ones to the horrible orange ones ? iv put a pic below to show what im taking about... Iv seen 1971 models with the orange and 69s with the clear ?? Is this an accessories that can be fitted to a 71 ??

Also iv noticed the steering wheels looks different on a 71.. is there any other differences between say a 69 and a 71 ?? obviously they both have IRS but is there any other differences ???

Cheers Guys.
Currently driving my 1st VW.. 67 type 3 1600..And loving it..

Well, there a mixture of tail lamps and front blinkers on the early models as there were some imported type 3s in the early 60s..
there were the round front blinkers in AMBER or clear...
also wraparound front blinkers in AMBER and clear..

the Aussie made ones usually didn't have the over rider bumpers just stright bumpers..
the Fastbacks did have the over riders I believe...
whether imported or locally assembled..

the 1970 models [from memory] had the late larger tail lamps and the wrap around amber front blinkers..
they also had the Europa square type bumpers from 1970..
the front guards/fenders are also longer from 1970..

about 1973 they got the collapsible steering wheel..
which I have in My beetle...

I hope this helps... its all I can think of at the moment..

the rubber over riders or rubber inserts were not used on Australian models..
[the rubber insert over riders were an accessory]

don't forget the door hinges and bonnet springs oh and also the wipers, ventilator vent/water drainage.

70 and prior the wipers rested on the left side.
70 and prior the bonnet was sprung via torsion bar
70 and prior water drainage and ventilator vent was short and front fire wall was flat, hence the torsion bars.
71 and up wipers rested on right side and pivot points of the wiper arm are off set by a few inches.
71 and up bonnet was sprung via 2 long spring anchored to the inner guard.
71 and up ventilator was resesed (spelling??) further into the fire wall hence the hump and longer water drainage pan, which required the bonnet springs.
72 and up the door hinges changed from the slot in style to external welded on brackets.

oh also at and up of 71 the ash tray was thinner and more rectangular before that they are more square/boxy

gauges also changed in 72. I hate the early ones 👎 does any one have late gauges I can buy??

What about the body? The bonnet is different, right, 70- on.
And did they change the length of the car somewhere along the line.

best way decide if you want early (slopy front nose) or late (pointy nose large tail lights) late type 3's are cheaper and rust more . The notch backs had the different hinges

yeah tell me about the rust.
I do like the late ones better, I like the looks more.

They rust more because of the seams, the seams were just left bare and rust from there.

Clear indicators tend to be a euro spec thing , type 3's built in Australia are a heap different to the rest of the world .
Andrew when you pop over i will go thru all the differences if u like.

Pre 1964 were fully imported, both Notch and Variant, with different interior trim and steering column than the 1964 on OZ assembled ones. Exterior the imported ones lacked the side chrome trim but had the overriders on bumpers as previously mentioned by someone. Imported 1964-65 Notches retained the extra inside trim plus a bit as well as having more shiny bits on the outside than the OZ built ones.

Are they worth more? ........... that depends on availability and the willingness of the buyer to pay the asking price.
Are they more desirable? ........ that depends on personal likes of different models

If you want the S version Notch from 1965 in OZ, just get any 1965 and I'll sell you an S badge for the numberplate housing as that was generally the only difference between the N and S except for the twin carbs.

If you want an imported 1964-1965 Notch or Variant S then that's another story! I've seen 4 for sale in the last 14 years. One sea blue a year or so back in Vic on fleabay... that one is now in Adelaide but not being restored to original, another one on maybe The Samba but was in Melbourne and was complete as far as I can remember, another one was rusting quietly away on a farm at Young and lastly, one at Eddy Laing's yard at Barnawartha which was complete in most areas including original engine. That one cost me around $2000 in 1999. I would think you would pay at least that much for anything imported which is worth restoring, remembering that much of the internal trim is getting very hard to find. Pushbutton light switches are almost non existent. I paid $250 for a NOS switch mid 90s and spent the next 4 years looking for a car to put it in! Expect to pay at least that for a good second hand one now. Ignition switch/steering lock for these models will also set you back $250 NOS or about the same for a non locking one from ISP West. Second hand ones can be a headache and may need to be rebuilt somehow with bits from other switches.

Hope that helps with my version of thoughts on early Type 3s.

The imported 1500s variencies are small , different indicators , short moustache on the bonnet, 45 degree angle cut on the edge of the body chrome rather than the 90 degree cut on the aussie spec and all standard models, various fabric interiors, rear seat with pulldown arm rest, option of two tone roof and i think the speedo was slightly different.

Not this one. The one I saw was white and was based in Melbourne.

The one in this add is definitely an Australian assembled 1965 1500S. That is, unless someone has stripped every single bit of the imported trim from both inside and outside! The only things the Australian produced S shared was (a) "S" on numberplate housing, (b) twin carb but standard 7.8:1 compression ratio engine. Most imported S engines had the dome top piston 8.5:1 compression ratio engine. (c) choice of two tone paint but imported S cars had different paint cutoff lines on turret to the Australian ones and (d) wheel trims.

All this said, the price he is asking would be more than reasonable if it has a good rust free body and low km engine. If not, and you can't do most of the restoration yourself they can be a money pit as many will agree on!

Most likely very hard as I don't think many or any Notches were imported in those years except maybe 1969. Phil Matthews history http://www.clubvw.org.au/Australian%20VW%20history%203.htm gives Notch and Square being local manufacture from 66 to ?? and only the Fasty was imported to replace the discontinued 1500S.
