Put the jack handle (use the kinked end is easiest) and put one end under the tab I have marked '1' in the photo and on the tab '2', then push the end of the handle down. The car will drop suddenly to the ground. Note that you can't let the car down partly or even gently, only drop it to the ground, so be carefull.
I used them for years with no problems, but these days I use the wind-up ones.

Thanks, will have to make up some sort of handle as that doesn't seem to be seen anywhere👍

Yeah I just did it by hand without a lever to see if it still worked. Does anyone have a photo of one similar so i could try and copy it?

those Bilstein jacks are great...
I have used them on VWs since 1968..
Never had any problems with them...

there should be a clip next to your spare wheel for the jack to sit in...
and the steel bar slides into the top..

and YES that is an early model jack... lol

the later ones had a pressed steel base..

I thought i had one once with two sockets for the steel bar
one for up... and another for down...??

the 74> later beetles had the wind up type jack...
it was kept under the back seat...

LEE

and Jeff is correct... once You place the bar into the down position and push down.... the jack goes all the way down..
