hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to post this.

i have a 68 beetle, it's been stripped down to just the shell and then pan, shell still bolts on then can be lifted off.

i was going to restore it but i don't see how i can fund this project anymore so i'm looking to see how much i could get for it...

when i bought the car it had a 1600 twin port, i'm not sure as I've never checked properly, there was talk of work being done on the engine, maybe bored out, the details are hazy as it hasn't been person to person contact between me and the person who was working on the car. the engine is out of the vehicle at the moment and supposedly running, not sure on km's.

there's no structural rust that i can find, I've had a good look everywhere, there is however flaky paint and a small amount of surface rust ( possible rat look ? )

everything will go with the car, lights, seats, fenders, etc etc, all in all a whole car, but some parts needing replacing, trims and seals etc.

the car is still rego'd at the moment, i'd have to check how long it has left but i'm fairly sure until the end of this year..

if anyone could point out how to get pictures up i'l upload some pics but any rough estimates on what you guys think this is worth would be well appreciated.

please no offers to buy at the moment, i'm still not sure if i want to part with it, just sorting out my options.

i'l update with more info later today as i'm going down to the shed to clean it out and organise a better spot for all the beetle's parts now,

thanks

Don't sell if think ya might regret it, having rego is a good start. You can get it up an running on a lower budget, concentrate on mechanicals and safety first and plod away at the rest as you can afford. It's a great hobby and you can get a lot out of it. Keep it stock for a start and do as much as you can yourself, I can't help you with what it's worth if you decide to sell, there is better experts on here, my vote is keep it!

It looks like a good solid car to start your project with, don't give up now! I strongly encourage you to keep the restoration going, even if you have to wait a year or so to save up money, the end result will be worth it!

In terms of value, if there is no way that you can proceed, then it's not worth much in it's current condition. Any "basket-case" car which is disassembled into lots of boxes is worth much less than an assembled, running car, even if all the parts are in the same condition. To put a number on it, I can't imagine anyone paying you more than $1000 for the car as an incomplete project, most likely much less. If you could get the car assembled, running and polished up a bit, then it would be worth at least twice as much as the pile of parts. The way to get maximum money out of it would be to break it for parts, but that would be a great shame. It's such a good base for a rebuild, it deserves to be put back together!

thanks mate, i paid 600 for it 😂

the story goes... (brace for wall post)

i bought the car as my first vehicle, i didnt have my license at the time and it was going to be restored by the time i did (2 years)

an uncle's mate in kalgoorlie, west aus, had owned it since new, sold to me for 600 bucks, rego'd for 6 months.

when i got it, it had some flaky paint, roof lining was torn in a few places, over all wasnt too bad, but had two exhaust valves burnt out.

since i had only just started my apprenticeship i sent the car away to a friend of a friend who does up drag cars and races them, and also knows his way around a vw..

the plan was to give him 1,000 to fix the engine up and fit twin carbs, nothing expensive or flash, just something to get started with. 2.5 years later and barely any response from him, i get the car back and realise he took the engine out, pulled it apart and did *something* to it, then left the beetle in a paddock for 2.5 years....

it came back with the engine sitting inside on the floor, alot of surface rust and all the bits and pieces from the engine bay sitting in the boot. it saddened me alot so it sat in the shed for 6 months, wishing it would fix itself... 🥲

then someone suggested a subaru conversion, possibly an ej22, which then encouraged me to start restoring it myself and when that was done, decide what engine i want in it..

so far, the only restoring has been taking old parts off, and the other day i came across a '74 kombi with a ej18 fitted and running, stickered for bald tyres and frayed seatbelts, with some cooling issues for 1k.

as part of my apprenticeship im going to get 800 bucks from the government very soon, and i plan to use that to ether fund the beetle or get this kombi, then sell the beetle to fund the kombi.

i used to have a 74 superbug as a daily driver, i loved my beetle but the lack of space just killed the experience so its making me think on starting this kombi...

while i'd like to keep either of them original, i think a more modern engine would be a bit better for me, and seeing as how one has already been ruined to fit the ej18, maybe i should please the purists and keep the beetle stock..

if i wasnt earning apprentice wages i'd keep both of em, and get more 🤓

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

hmm.. ok i'l start by pulling the engine apart to see what has been done,

will i be able to just pull one head off and figure out a bore from that? apparently it has been bored out but i really doubt that

Edit:
update from shed via spiffy new iPhone

Glad I didn't just put the engine in, so far it's all finger tight.....

Edit:

update number two, both heads off, not gonna go any further, he hasn't done anything i don't think, took pictures of all the numbers i could find, if anyone has a clue about how to ID a vw engine could you have a look at the photobucket link posted at the start of this thread?, cheers.

i'l get some specs from what i'm told the engine is, then compared to what it actually measures at and see what i'l do from there..

mother ( i say mother in an insulting way, as in she's nagging me, i just joking by the way... ) is keen for her shed to be vw free, as she has plans of her own.. so it looks like it will be sold as is, i'm not to fussed about the price difference, the way i look at it i'm saving myself the hours of fixing it up, while i'd enjoy it, i don't like working on something only for someone else to have it. if i'm going to spend hours on end on something, i want it to be my pride and joy..

Sorry mate but there is a lot of work to just reassemble what you have, unfortunately a lot of us have brought projects like this in the past and then spent untold dollars and hours rebuilding them.As it sits the value would appear to be small.

well it seems you have a bit of pressure to get it out of the shed, should get your $600 back I reckon but if ye go the Kombi way it's still a dub! I'd buy it if I was closer, I already got two '68's wrapped up in tarps waiting for the day so only dreamin, good luck with what ya decide, pity ya can't just store it away somewhere for when you can afford it!

trust me a vw with a running EJ conversion is well worth 1k even if it is only an EJ18 and the bus itself is a piece of crap.

overheating issues are easy sorted
