Hi Gentleman

Where does the compliance plate go on a 1973 beetle. I have looked at a couple of cars and they are fixed up front but for some reason, this compliance plate doesnt seem to fit where the others do.

Take a look at see if you can work i out.

That is a 1300 Pov Pack Bug so the plate is ment to be behind the spare wheel so next to the inspection plate sorta. Not on the front apron. superbugs have a bigger front apron and thats why there mounted there cause the spare wheel lays flatt in supers.

The aus compliance tags went to the right of the shiftrod access panel

those holes near the latch were where the production tags went on US and euro models.
they put them in the washer bottle recess in aus for some reason

3rd pic Birch, he's got the tag there for it
aus tags have been around since early 70

If the holes aren't there then its probably just had a replacement clip fitted after an accident or rust repairs

but getting a drill down in there might be a mission
My rota bug which had the radiator there had the tag riveted to the inside of the glovebox lid 😂..... classy

thats pretty common after resprays or accident repairs/replacement valances and occasionally body swaps

My old convertable was missing it, it's no biggy as they still have the vin on the chassis
