I'm currently considering a type 4 conversion for my beetle and have already purchased a 76-79 transporter block (2L type 2) to kick start the project. While taking my time tearing down the block I have begun to write a shopping list of parts required which include a 78-80mm crank (depending on clearance) and 96mm p&c. However, I am struggling to decide on what cam to use and like the look of the engle fk series cams due to the freedom of using 1.25 or 1.4 ratio rockers. So far narrowed it down to FK-42, FK-43, FK-7 or FK-8.
I would like to use the beetle for Sunday circuit sessions as well as cruising.
Just wanting to get some feedback from everyone as to what they are using in terms of cams and their main use.
Let us know how you do when it comes to sourcing bearings for your rebuild.
The word here in the States is that standard size bearings for a Type 4 are no longer available. Oversize bearings are in short supply. At this point in time nothing is expected on the market for the next year and a half.
I've got a relatively mild cam in my 2 litre type 4 bug. Not sure of the details but when checking the valve clearances I measured about 270 degrees of duration. This engine is happy to idle along in third gear at walking pace, but the power tapers off after 5000rpm so I'd like to try something a little wilder for the track. A lot of the info on the net says the type 4 likes a bit of extra duration on the exhaust compared to a type 1.
i got my cam a few years ago and is a custom grind from vforce. at the time richard only got 3 grinds , a mild and 2 wilds that werent too lumpy. it might be worth your time to give richard a ring and see if can help you. he does a lot of type 4 stuff. other than that theres 66deluxe on here, from what ive read he knows his way around the engines.
personally ive got a mild cam from vforce in a stock 2L with 40mm dells and it hammers.
I have a cam that I purchased for a T4 hydraulic but it was actually a performance cam,it ran well in the 2.0 litre over 1000rpm but had a poor idle,I think it was about 320 duration,I will check tomorrow.

Just to let you know Engle don't make any cams for type 4, also if you are serious on a 78x96 combo go for a webcam 16386B cam has 0.500" lift with split duration of 284/300 degrees i have two of these but done to Raby's spec which differs slightly from the webcam, if you were to build a 2056 which is 71x96 which is a cheaper build just need the 96mm P&C's go for a WEbcam 494 cam. Heads are whats needed also i got Raby's LE 200's, Le 180's and also get heads done locally using new AMC heads but install 42x36mm valves, seats, guides and springs, with the 16386b cam you will need dual springs, the 494 can get by with Heavy duty single springs.
Damo.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

me and my dad are currently converting a type 4 into upright with a raby dtm kit, i would recommend this kit..
Hell yeah, totally agree on the DTM have got two of them, their the best, cheapest and work well and install the easiest, porsche fans are for flat 6 engines.

Craig i don't have any the heads i listed are my own for my engines, i only want to build my own engines then run them too make sure the good then pull them out and sell them and the money form the sale funds the next build combo.
