The thing sounds like it's got a bunch of marbles rolling around in it.

Give Performance Pipes a call and ask for John.

ha ha
yepp, seriously there is 20% plus ...power loss on hills and under load
car starts to stall on occasions ie at traffic lights.
The cat verter sends message to the eng managemnet system and the fuel consumption goes way up.
Eng temp can be raised somewhat....
Whistling exhaust also is an indicator.....

This is interesting. maybe just gut it for the moment and see how u go (stick in a steel bar like a socket extension and hammer it out, the honey comb mesh is brittle). They are exy cause the honey comb mesh of a cat contains a coating of platinum. If for some reason the car is run really hot, this mesh can melt and fuse, causing too much exhaust pressure and overheating. Certain fuels and additives can bugger up the cats as well in regards to the coating. Don't gut ur cat unless u are sure the cat is dead, they aren't cheap.

messages to the engine managment is only an oxygen sensor for emissions, not that cat itself. It may be in the cat, or just after in the 'pipe line'.

If u are worried about the oxygen sensor, maybe swap for one at a wreckers. and u won't need to spend $1200 on a new cat. an exhaust shop can retrofit a 'generic' and it doesn't take that much talent to cut and remount the oxygen sensor.

The oxygen sensor tells the engine management whether the fuel mixture is rich or lean. the cat simply breaks down toxic byproducts like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide into harmless CO2 and NO2. they do different jobs and shouldn't impose on each other.

If the cat is buggered, it won't harm fuel mixture or tell the computer differently, it just pumps out more toxic gases. so in turn, shouldn't influence fuel consumption, unless its gunked or melted up hindering exhaust gas flow. oxygen sensor on the other hand, certainly can.

Some food for thought anyways... but u really should be able to run a car fine and dandy without a cat and not dull down ur engine performance. Not saying that u would cause of the environment and stuff and bad emissions, but in saying so, i doubt it would be the source of ur probs.

Keep us updated on ur findings!

One more thing, do u have only 1 or two oxygen sensors through ur exhaust?

and was there ever a 'check engine' light?

Don't! get a second hand O2 sensor. You will be wasting money if you do. If you have 2 of them like one before and after the cat then a busted cat will throw out the A/F readings to some degree on the after sensor? I think?

btw 1200 BUKS !!!! wtf!! why? once you start getting past 200 dollar mark thats is considered expensive. These are also the completely SS metal substrate with 200CPSI hi flow cats. So why on earth would a crappy ceramic stocky cost 1200???

go to ebay, buy one off there, take it to your local exhaust shop and get them to fit it. Way less than 1200

Nissan have it as well as subaru attached to the manifold.

in 2005 as stated below, they recalled these

GUESS WHAT there are times when the exhaust with particles can get into the engine...now i have too low compression (wet and dry) due to these hot particles damaging the cylinders and perhaps the valves!!!
any offers under $5,000(yepp u heard ..dealer quote!!! to repair or replace my engine. went very well until this happened..then suddenly lost power esp on hills. 30% more fuel cosumption!!! too.
whether on petrol or lpg !!! will be negotiating with Nissan asap for assistance.
any suggestions / contacts /drinkin buddies?/
saw a neat short eng in Usa but need the car asap...
pls someone in Sth East Qld...

So the engine is fuched? I am guessing bits of ceramic from the cat got its way into the cylinders via the scavenging effect?

You could try to rebuild it yourself.

Main parts you will need is pistons, rings and machine work. valves should be ok. Is it petrol or diesel?

its all the other bits that will cost a bit.

Bearings, gaskets, bolts ect... You should be able to rebuild it for around 2k? most of that quote you have is labor.
