Hi guys.

I've got a reduction hub gearbox and am considering building a buggy with it however I don't have a VW engine. So, given all my likely candidates for fitting to this gearbox have more power than a kombi or coutry buggy could dream of, how much power/toque will the gearbox take before going boom? Also, is there an rpm limit?

And don't worry, I'm no stranger to engine conversions. 🙂

Thanks

Also, what usually fails first?

Thanks

Having owned a spltty kombi with a twin weber cam'ed 180b engine. It used to break the diff housing top and bottom between the top bolts if I dropped the clutch. behind a vw motor is ok but it didnt like to thrashed take into account the extra weight it may be okay in a buggy

My Brother tried this in a Baja using a gearbox from a '65 Kombi - not a good result! 🙁

The main problem is the amount of lift that you get due to the axles rotating the other way (compared to a normal gearbox) - the car would lift the rear suspension an amazing amount when you applied the power... even at high speed (was really freaky on the highway).

Eventually he buckled the RH spring plate when the rear of the car bounced off the ground whilst climbing a rocky hill in first gear... nearly rolled the car. The car was refitted with a stock swing axle box before he went to bed that night 😀

I have heard of Country Buggy owners having a similar problem as they too run reduction box rear ends....

Thanks guys!

This buggy will be used mostly for utility purposes so the rising rear end shouldn't be too much of a problem..... I hope.

Does anyone know how much travel the joints will take, I wont be using vw suspension so that's really my only limitation.

Thanks
