I have a 1970 1300 Beetle but I have a problem with the engine number.

The chassis number is 1112655904 which is 1970.

The engine is a twin port and the engine cover says VW1300 on it.

The engine number is AB199983. There is my problem. John Muir in his Idiot's guide does not show that number as there should be 7 numbers; not 6 as above. Also all AB numbers in his book start with 0.

Can someone please explain what's going on here?

Muirs manual or bog roll as I'd prefer to call it like most other manuals and online stuff doesnt take into account that Australia ran a different model and engine line up to the US

Your bug is one of the aussie spec 1300 base models bugs and its a 71 as well, itll have the 5 dash vent slots and the bananna vents behind the side windows

The AB engine was the correct one for it and just a quick glance at that number its a safe bets it's original too.

Hi Joel.

Thank you. You are right about the engine being original, the air slots and the vents.

So, it's a '71. Thanks for that.
