I had some new tyres fitted today and the tyre bloke ( tyre power) said they are unable to balance my wheels(wide 5s ) as their machine is not compatible.
I asked if anyone in port could and he doesn't think so!
Anyone had this problem?
I am hopeful that as the tyres are good quality toyos they wont be a problem in the short term but If I need to get them balanced any ideas?

MAYBE yOU WILL NEED TO TRY SOMEONE WITH AN OLD BALANCER

as most wheels have a round hole in the centre of the wheel

not sure how a wide 5 would fit??

take an old front brake drum to a engineering shop and have them cut the sides of it and you will be left with a flat plate that can be bolted to your wheels for balancing. 😉

As luftmeister has said above.

I had trouble getting my wheels for the Baja balanced because the holes in the center are quite large, too big for the holding cones on the wheel balancer.

All I did was take along an old front drum and they bolted that to the wheels for balancing.

Hope this helps

You used to be able to balance the wheels while still on the car. Havent heard of it in a couple of decades though.

You could alway take the John Muir approach.

Its really just the size of the hole in the middle of the rim being used to locate the centre of the wheel to the center of the machine... Drum sounds good, but how round are the wheels too? Old seel wheels can be hard to get a great result, or one that is not already covered by a good quality tyre and tight suspension components.

Hi

If your a member of Club Vee Dub they have a jig that members can borrow to use for this, its a cut down brake drum, one of those adaptors that Kutcher was selling would be ideal to use as well.

as previously posted, look around for someone with an old "on the vehicle" balancer, many years ago I had a Peugeot that was almost imposible to get a good balance on "off the car", on the car ballance never had a problem.

Its a long way to go for you but we can balance your wide 5 rims with our balancer, without the need to use an adapter.

I recently heard a new idea where a certain amount of small balls are added to the inside of the tyre when fitted and this sorts the imbalance by centrifugal force to where they are needed and no need for lead weights, good for wide five rims. Can't say where this came from though and it is new.

Problem there is that you would need that hub dynamically balanced with the bolts position marked before balancing the wheels.

you see if you have a unbalanced hub then the wheel balance would be void.

Was it from the Modern Motor magazine of 1953? there were a lot of these type of doovers around back then including a ring that fitted onto the outside of the rim to centrifugally balance the wheels when in motion.🤪
When the tyres are fitted to the rims there is a balance point on the tyre that lines up with the valve, this allows for the weight of the valve stem and in most cases balance will be close.Unfortunately a lot of tyre fitters are uneducated in this regard and whack them on the rim anywhere.I have had tyres fitted and requested this to be done but when picking them up the marks are all over the place,to correct it when asked they simply clean the balance points off the tyre.

So I found a place with one of those on vehicle balancers, trouble is it's at Belmont near Newcastle, bit of a hike for you. 🙁
