This is arguable Australia's most reliable hotted up VW type 1 engine. It has proven reliable time and time again, without fail for drag racing, circuit racing, hillclimbs and the Dutton Rally with 78 events in 3 days! It's always driven to and from each event, no need for a trailer with this much reliability.

It was recently dynoed at 96.4 horsepower with an enviable power curve. It's well mannered and idles like a stocker. Last weekend it performed faultlessly at Eastern Creek and almost cracked the 2 minute mark (To see video click here ). It'll do a 14.6 quarter at WSID in my oval and 9.2 seconds at Warwick in the high altitude.

I've spent years developing a reliable, powerful, easy and fun combination. I've decided to keep tinkering and try a stroker crank. Then, I thought it would be a shame to ruin such a perfect combination. So I've decided to see if anyone wants to buy it first.

Specs
Sabadusi Crank Counterweighted only 1 grind under on the crank with standard journal size. So it's got plenty of life left in it. 8 dowel very light flywheel. New rod and crank bearings installed May 2009.

Engle K8 cam by CB Performance (No K8 bad harmonic apparently). Standard lifters reground by Ivan Tighe Engineering. Cam, lifters and upper and lower dual thrust cam bearings installed May 2009.

AS41 case machined by Stan Pobjoy.

Chromoly Pushrods, 1.4 rockers, bolt together rocker shafts.

Stan Pobjoy customer 44 ID short manifolds with great quality original 44IDF webers and hex bar linkage with new Finer Filter Air Filters.

Stan Pobjoy sump and modified pushrod tubes.

700ml oil catch can with drain and associated breather lines.

Full flow oil system.

Alternator with top engine tin custom painted by Hi Octane coatings.

2 or 3 year old 009 dizzy with pertronix module and MSD 6AL ignition.

Exhaust is an old school Berg/Phoenix header with a shortened flange and a ceramic coated 2.5 inch muffler by Brad at Westside Mufflers in Padstow.

I'm selling the complete engine, with everything but the clutch which is an Exedy item.

The buyer can drive it and then help me remove it.

$6500 for the lot.

Oops, I'd forget my heads if they weren't screwed on.

I've spent a lot of time with heads on this engine.

First, my hogged-out 44 x 37 valve street eliminators made only 76 RWHP.

Then I tried some old 40 x 35.5 valve 044s with a bit of porting and 10.1 compression from a hillclimb car. They made 89 HP.

The heads have on the car now made 99.9 RWHP in 2007 with an Engle W130 cam. They flow 154.5 at a depression of 28, whatever that means. They were flowed by RAMS head services in Richmond NSW.

They were purchased from Aircooled.net as their Level 5 design. Here's the blurb:

Our L5 now has a new port design, and outflows many 42 and 44mm intakes! This is a superb selection for a non-welded head, and is based on the 043 or 044 casting (depending on availability). Larger then stock 40 X 35.5 valves, Dual HD valve springs (good to 8K), racing valve job, and attention to detail, these are fantastic for small and medium sized engines on a budget! These can really spank "large" engines with "CNC ported heads" because the airspeed is so phenominal, and they flow about 180cfm on the intakes! We recommend valve lifts in the .450-.500" range with these heads.

I wasn't happy with the valve job they came with and I got RAMS Head Service to give them a proper 3 angle valve job. I think the heads are about 45cc which leaves compression at 9.6:1.

The Rods were replaced with new CB Performance Chromoly Super Race Rods in 2007 with ARP rod bolts. The bearings were replaced in May 2009.

Yep, combustion chambers, pistons and exhaust are ceramic coated.

If I don't sell the engine I'll keep it and convert the rest of the car to a WRX 😂

All I know is that I'm going to try a bigger stroke and 48 IDAs.

I resisted ratio rocker cams for a while, then tried the K8 with 1.4s and was converted. They're great.

I've stuck with the 69mm crank because I love revy engines.

I'll chat with Marty Staggs, Larry and John Latamatos and try and come up with some ideas for another good all-rounder.

Very cool that you're back in and playing CT, and yeah - pretty good deal there for someone who wants a proven combo.... especially when you consider what those extra things like tinware, carb's etc. are actually worth.

Let alone the stuffing around and $$$ to get the jetting as spot-on as you have it !!!

👍

Warwick's pretty damn close now tho... we likely to see the new setup there ??? I hope so... that'd be VERY cool....

With dyno charts etc. to prove it?
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

For the long block including heads, manifolds, flywheel and everything in between $5,000.

That means no 44IDF webers, exhaust, oil breather system or engine tin and alternator.
