Hey all.

Just need to ask a quick question about fuel senders to the boffins!

I currently have the 6V setup in my Baja, that is, separate fuel gauge to the left of the speedo and the cylindrical sender in the tank. I'm looking to put a 68/69 gauge in that has the built in fuel sender so I can free up some space on my dash.

I'm just wondering, will the later model fuel gauge work with the early model sender? Or will I have to swap in a late sender with the float arm arrangement too?

Thanks in advance.

Your running 12 volt now though aren't ya?

I can honestly say from experience that it doesn't work the other way around, as in 6 volt separate guage with a 12 volt sender, it provided an 'over optimistic' result.

That was with a 12 volt battery. A 2nd hand 12 volt fuel sender on a wtb shouldn't cost all that much.

Yeah I am running 12 Volt at the moment.

I've got all the bits 😂

I just need to know which way round I should put everything.

Hi
I think You could make it work.. as nothing is impossible,,,
but can be fiddly to obtain the correct measurements..

You can only try it to see what happens...

You may need a resistor to adjust the gauge reading...
just trail and error...

I'll throw it in over the weekend and see what happens. Not that the old one is very accurate anyway, so I'm used to reading an "off" gauge.

You will need a 12 volt sender ,as the existing 6 volt setup will work only when it has both items that are still 6 volt , ie you cannot mix voltage spec'd item s
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel

Cheers dude.

Will the later sender bolt into an early tank?

I'm sure I have a spare one for my Semi-auto here somewhere. Will give it a try.

Just had a play with the bits I have here at home.
And turns out either my second hand late sender is broke or the gauge is the speedo is cactus.

I've been looking at the later speedo and I don't really like it. The 'look' isn't right and doesn't suit the car in my opinion.

So I might keep the old setup and just find a new home for the fuel gauge to live.

One on the left is the one out of the car, one on the right is later model. The one in my 1500 looks like the early one (same fascia) but has the built in gauge. Is this because it's an import cause it's semi-auto?? The later gauge I have here also can out of a 1500 (about 10 minutes ago) but is the ugly later looking one.

And one last question before I go do something.
Can anyone tell me what the bottom terminal is for on the fuel gauge? I noticed mine has the top two wired to the power supply and sender respectively. But the bottom wasn't connected at all. Is it just an earth for the backlight?

Thanks to everyone for their responses so far.

Early for the way man,
it looks so good in comparison.

I kept my 6 volt gauge simply for the same reason, and when it misbehaved with the 12 volt sender, i got a 12 volt speedo with fuel guage.

then i found a proper 1500 speedo with guage, that still had the classic old rings/face decore' as opposed to the later super bug ones.
It looks schmick with the 'classic' appeal as well.

I have a friend who knows a guy that makes custom fascia's for guages, you can even post him any image and he will print it on it for you, if u wanted to go to that effort for the later speedo. Pretty reasonably priced too.
Or perhaps find a 1500 one... cause they are 12volt and look hot.

Yeah. I was sure I had another good looking 1500 one here somewhere. Who knows. I have over a dozen spare gauges around the place. Guess I'll just have to go hunting again 😂

Just pop down autopro, autobarn etc and get a basic sender and gauge package. mine was 50 bucks from Autobarn and it came with a single holder(i had the twin already). dead simple to fit and works fine (nearly 2 years now).

then just mount under the dash somewhere, mines central under the ashtray and no i dont hit it when changing gears :o)

That was a 68 only speedo thing, the german ones were the same but in Km/h and do they fetch good $$ on ebay 🤪
But then again i witnessed some used 50/50 tail lenses only, not housings go for $226 the other day
makes me glad im not a purist into early stuff

I have a 6V sender working to a 12V fuel gauge in the speedo

works well and reads accurate at the 1/2, 1/4 and reserve indications
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true
