I was reading some other posts and blokes are talking about 73/4 Kombi's being fuel injected. The 2 litr motor in my 76 bus looks to be twin solex? carbs. Has air-con though.

sorry if the title offended. Trying to figure out if the rear subframe/engine cradle is part of the floor pan or can you remove it and seperate it and the floorpan. Aquired a 76 2 ltr kombi for the engine and gearbox. The floors, sliding door, passenger door and bottom quarters rear are rusted out so the drivetrain is going in my trike. Have electrical issues with the wiring as no power is getting to the ignition and fuses appear to be ok. Looked up wiring diagrams on the net and all of them say that it is fuel inected for that age bug it has what looks to be carbs( unless they are massive throttle bodies). Can anyone shed some light on this please

'76 could be either, carbs or efi, what was there originally isn't for me to say, but there are tell tail signs around the car to work it out if you want.
No kombi has removeable body/chassis. It's a welded chassis/body combination, although some people have done some huge rust or panel repair where complete or nearly so disassembly has been done.....many many hours so don't go there. If you want the rear end for a trike or something, use an oxy and cutoff saw, but most people use the type 3 rear subframe as a good starting base.

1973/74 Kombis were NOT fuel injected. Australian models were assembled in Melbourne from German CKD parts. Fuel injection did not appear on Australian models until mid-1976, in response to meeting the emission requirements of ADR27A. When local Kombi assembly ended in early 1977, all models were then fully imported - these reverted (mostly) back to twin-carb until imports ended in 1979.

Remember that Australian-market VWs were often very different from what they got in the USA. US websites are great for US-market VWs, but for Australian VWs they are often wrong. US models may have been exclusively fuel injected in 1976, but Australian ones weren't. If you buy the Bentley manual, it offers procedures and diagrams for both types. Even better is the old Gregory's manual, which was produced in Australia for Australian models.

Your Kombi should have two Solex 34PDSIT carburettors. They are not exactly 'twin' carbs - they are not quite the same. The left carb has more controls than the right carb and is the 'master' carb. The right is the 'slave' carb. They are more like a single carb divided in two, if that makes sense. They have a complicated cross-over communication system with an integrated air cleaner, and three separate idle circuits, as well as a vacuum takeoff for the brake booster. They work extremely well when tuned correctly in a stock situation. I've never seen a Kombi engine (Type 4) in a trike - are you planning on using the stock 'pancake' tinware, or are you converting it to a Beetle-style upright cooling fan?

Air-con was available as a dealer-fitted accessory, or more commonly fitted by an after-market supplier. You don't see air con '76 Kombis very often, so yours is rather special. Pity the body is rotted!

As Matt has said, Kombis were not like Beetles with their removeable body shells. They don't have 'floorpans'. ALL Kombis are unitary body - the body is one integral, very strong component, just like a Golf. The suspension, gearbox and engine are bolted to the unitary body. There is also no engine 'subframe' as such. The gearbox is bolted to front mounting, and to a 'hanger' just in front of the engine. The engine is bolted to the gearbox, and has an additional cross support at the rear, which undoes with four bolts. The rear torsion bar housing is integral with the body and would have to be cut off.

Will use the pancake tins, might have to change the carb set-up though.I was under the beast this arv looking around and worked out where to cut the back section off. As for rust, it is fixable but at what cost. Throwing money at something doesnt always make it better, found more cancer around the edges of the firewall(?) and inside the rear fluted bit. Has good chrome headlight and stuff, and all the window are pretty good(rust around top of windscreen) so would probably be good for some rust repair pannels
