I know they are illegal in NSW...

I believe the indicators need to flash...

Most people wouldn't know what they meant or take any notice of them....

much safer to have blinkers front & rear..

Australian design rules only apply to vehicles made AFTER they come into effect. The First Edition ADRs were distributed only for discussion purposes. However, they were not adopted as a legally binding set of standards under either national or state/territory law.

The Second Edition ADRs first came into effect on 1 January 1969. These ADRs were selectively applied under state/territory law. They were subsequently made part of the national standards by Determination No 2 of 1989 published by the Commonwealth Government Gazette (Special Gazette series) No S 291 dated 1 September 1989.

A 1958 Beetle fitted with trafficators as original equipment is not required to meet modern design laws, any more than any other car made 52 years ago. If the car had them fitted from new, then they are legal. Of course, whether they are SAFE in today's traffic is another point entirely.

So could you leave them on and operative but rig up a flasher unit to the circuit turning them into flashing indicators? Only real problem I see there is that they would not be as visible from certain directions front and rear of car.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

Thats great info ... I always assumed that they'd have to meet modern requirements with things like indicators. Looks like semaphores are back on the cards for my 57 Oval 'rebuild' 😉

What are you smoking, 🤪 my oval was blue sliped with semaphores, and passes every year for a pink slip with them.
