We have recently purchased a replacement floor pan for our 1970 beetle as ours was pretty sad. The new pan we bought has an IRS rear which has been all reconditioned and we now need a gearbox to suit (old pan was swing axle). What sort of money should we be looking for when buying one and more importantly does anyone have a good one for sale? We are in Ipswich but are happy to travel for a good one.
While on the gearbox topic we are pretty new to beetles (had nothing but old Fords) so this may seem like a stupid question but can we refit the swing axle rear to the IRS floor?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
I am fairly sure that the swing axle box cannot be interchanged into an IRS rear,I have an unknown S bug box which to the best of my knowledge was good.I have never driven the vehicle that it came out of.I am asking $350 as is.Cheers Les
swinger box in an irs pan... dont see why not, just means the trailing arm mounts are redundant,
and i have 2x irs bug boxes sitting in ipswich, one was used in my bug, the other i wouldnt have a clue only thing i did to it was take it out as i stripped the car

Thanks for the reply, our swing axle gearbox isnt in the best condition anyway (never test drove the car on the road) but it wouldnt go into reverse which I have heard will pretty mean it will have to be rebuilt. STIDUB Would you be interested in selling one of them and if so how much?
i have a for sale thread on here somewhere, think they were $200 each or something
