Howdy

My stock 74 Superbug has a basically 1600cc

Whilst a little tired the engine has been Ok til now

It has suddenly started to run very badly and I'm concerned that something has gone ping. At first I thought it was just winter blues, as it's damm cold here in Melb now. But a tune did'na fix me up

I noticed that I have a what I consider to be lot of crank case pressure in the breather hose, which is not consistant put varies in pressure - basically it's chuffing out the breather.

I have checked the spark to cylinders & its fine. I have fairly new coil, leads, dissie and electronic points - so it's not that. Has tracking in the dissie cap which I have to clean, but that's another query for another day.

Also have plugs that are fouling pretty quickly, but I do too much short running

My guess is I may have
1. burnt a valve, as the bad running symptoms are similar to a cylinder mis-fire
2. buggered a ring

Next I guess is a compression test, but I thought I try the gurus here first

Regards
Paul

Umm........g'day, in a sad sort of way

Can you define "run vary badly" any better??
Are you blowing any oil about the place??
A stocker with lots of crank case pressure i would think would blow oil out behind the puley??

If you pull each wire does it fire evenly??
You say "I have checked the spark to cylinders & its fine"
Can you explain more??

Is it fouling all plugs evenly??
What about a stuck needle and seat??

I would be looking at a simple carb problem

If it's chuffing out the breather it is getting combustion blow by into the case which points to worn rings or a burnt piston unfortunately

Cheers barry

I'm not leaking excessive oil, barely any. Car has & does use oil at a level I'd expect for its age.

I checked spark to each cyl via timing light which suggested clean firing to all - not very scientific, but tells me they're firing happily. Doesn't pick a mis-fire though.

Yes, the plug fouling is even & black to all - looks like running v. rich. But the 2 klm run to the station each day doesn't help here.

This engine has gone from running fine to running crap quite quickly, however yes it could still be a simple carb problem

Mind you I hate tuning these Pict34 carbs, not something I'm confident with. But the idiots guide has kept me going thus far.

Tomorrows job is to re-tune the carb I suspect.

Thanks all - sounds like a comp test will confirm or eliminate the ring / piston question. And then hopefully I'll need to re-tune my carby

& yes Rob & Daves is a great resource - that's a great carb tune lesson. Would love to have some pictures there to.

Some chuffing out the breather may be normal.
Tracking in the dist. cap is a query for before the next time it leaves the driveway! This may mean regular misfiring on every engine rev.

Plugs fouling may be just (1) a symptom of rich running, or misfiring.
OR may be (2) due to burning oil (from worn rings etc.)
The 'cures' are different in each case, so you need to know if (1) or (2) is the problem.
If all plugs are evenly sooty-black, it sounds like it's too rich and/or misfiring.

well I finally had the time to do the work

Installed my nice new carby, added a set of new plugs, and used Rob & daves guide to set the mixture & tune up. I need another tacho to set the timing as mine doesn't go to 3500rpm. But I kow i'm pretty close just to right just by how well its running

With the SVDA and compufire covering the tedious bits its all come together quite well. The choke is working nicely for the cold mornings, and the smooth power curve of correctly supplied fule is nice.

Bottom line is that I had the mixture in the 36 Year old carby all wrong, and the new one from CIP does the trick nicely

I am smoking a little from 1&2 tail pipe, sespecially when cold, so i guess I have a project ahead of of me still

But the chuff is gone and I'm better at tuning the beasty

Thanks for the help folks

So all good and done? so buggered piston ring?

The great thing is, on egay u can get a new set of pistons, barrels AND rings for between $150 to $240 for a 1600tp from australia if ur patient. (theres this dude that lists it up like once a fortnightish... don't quote me, but its always popping up).

One way or another would have been an easy fix 😂

somewhat bizarrely the little beggar decided to play up once more

I found I had cold engine and foulled plug on #3!

Agggghhh said I fearing fatal diseases of the worts kind

Having concluded I had something seriously stuffed, I decided that I needed to examine for basic evidence of major failure. I thought valves or rings, so I should examine zee heads & compression

Popped the rocker cover off, and there was sight.

my rocker gear was way loose, and thus No 3 has no working pushrods and terefore is not firing. What a putz am I. No wonder she's rough on 2.2 cylinders.

I remove the rocker gear, clean & examine all the bits, and finding nothing destroyed (go figure) I bolt it back togther. I've re-torqued all the relevant bits on both sides & all is good - and she starts & runs

Damm these things are tough & forgiving

My beast is purring and I simply had to spend some time adjusting for my own incompetance. again Doh!
