Hi guys and girls, I have just bought a 12 volt 1500 motor( came from a 69 beetle) for my 1967 1300 beetle. How do I go fitting this engine? do I need to change the clutch or other things for it to fit? also how do I do the converion to 12 volt? do I need to fit a voltage regulator? how and where do I fit the regulator?Do I need a regulator if I use an altinator? I know I need to change the wiper motor and all the globes but what else do I need to do,Cheers Gary

look for short vids on youtube.
Depends if you keeping the 6 volt flywheel and clutch .normaly you have to change the fly wheel and starter, clutch and starter bush.
and grind out gear box to fit larger 12volts flywheel in .

Hi Gary,
You will need a 12 volt clutch assembly and flywheel...
which will be on the 1500 engine...lol

I have heard of people just bolting the engine in slightly and starting the engine, then doing the bolts up slowly...
the ring gear is very sharp on the edges and will machine off the alloy in the bell housing as You do the bolts up..
not much needs to be taken off...

If You fit an alternator with internal regulator [best type] then
You connect one large red wire to the alternator b+
this goes to the battery +

and the small wire to the other terminal on the alternator..
this is the dash light.. which needs to work for the alternator to work...
no other regulator is needed...

the 6 volt starter will do the job for a while...
if the engine starts first time it will last a long time..

the 6 volt wiper motor is ok,, Use a white resistor that was used on old Ford Falcons etc years ago....
one will be fast... if You use two in series... slower...

cheers

LEE

PS: flasher unit...12 volt.. coil 12 volt...
points - fuel gauge- should be OK... also 12 v horn... LEE

thanks guys, well the engine is a complete runner (had running on shed floor)and all parts are there.so I just have to take one out and put the new one in. It has the flywheel and clutch with it.So by the sounds of it the rest of the conversion sould be easy. Cheers Gary. PS I have bought a 6 Volt Voltage Drop Resistor from the USA to take care of the window wiper motor.

Don't forget that the 6 volt flywheel has a different number of teeth to the 12 volt flywheel, this will work for a while but makes ungodly noises as it strips the teeth each start and then leaves you stranded when you least expect it.Fit the modified bush and a 12 volt starter.
