Today I was driving my 62 beetle when I heard a snap and realised the accelerator pedal had moved somewhat on an angle and as a result, acceleration was difficult!

Had a look and found the hing had snapped in one place (see pic).

What should I do? I know you can be replacement hinges like this one:

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D701%2D535%2DA

But, do you think I can weld that break? I have never welded before, and would have to get someone to do it, but i think it would be easier than getting the whole old hinge off and rewelding the whole thing on.

My may concern is that the hinge broke due to rust, as in the pic you can se rust around the break. Perhaps there was a crack there for a long time and the rust slowly formed.

Ideas???

Note: Picture shows the back of the pedal where it connects to the hinge

A cheap and good fix is.. Go to your hardware store, find a suitable door hinge made from metal and do a little welding/fabrication.

Worked good on my old fasty 👍

So no one would recommend just welding the break?

I have no welding skills am also imagining how hard it would be to get the old one off unattached from the floor.

Thanks Waveman, for at least clearing up one thing. Ok so can't weld that break.

But still, doesn't the replacement hinge have to be welded to the floor anyway? So if I cant weld i will have to pay someone to weld that. I know Vintage would supply the replacement bit, but would they weld the new hinge on too?

If you in Sydney yes Vintage can weld the lower section hinge in place

Alternatively you can drill and bolt it in place would work just as well if your handy with tools etc etc

Hi Guys

I just discovered something very important! It is not the hinge thats broken but the arm of the accelerator pedal itself. I am much happy now as that means no welding!

New question now. How the heck do I get the pin out to get the accelerator pedal off?

Anyone got a spare accelerator pedal they want to sell to suit a 62 bug????

I tapped mine out with another smaller rod and a hammer.

IE: pop rivet stem etc. etc.

anything you can get in there 👍 Its not too stiff. If rusty, lubing it up with wd40 wouldn't go astray.

Thats a 5 second fix for a welder. Line it up and drill a hole through just the pedal plate to show the snapped off bracket below and a welder can plug weld that in place.

Total cost $10 max at any garage.
