Hi,
heres me spamming more tech questions, i know... annoying...
BUT!
I have a stock disc brake front end from a 1969 stickshift. I have vw thing spindles that take drums and have no bolt on provisions to take these disc brake calipers from the bug.
I have looked at Caliper brackets, but so far, only found caliper brackets that mount to bug drum spindles and use type 3 calipers or brakes from non-vw cars.
Does anyone know where i can get brackets from that take bug caliper to a bug spindle (seeing vw thing drum backing plate bolt patterns should be the same as bug)?
Are type 3 and bug the same?
here is an eg:

I would have thought bug caliper brackets to bug drum spindles would have been the first type i would have found lol.
Thanks muchly lads,
Chris.

They need to be Thing specific. I need some too, may need to make my own. CVD did have them but not atm and exxy. There were some available in the states, but they aren't being advertised now !!!! Give me a call if you want in for a set.

From what I've read Chris
drum brake axles are different to disc brake axles....
and as they didn't have disc brakes in the USA on any beetles
they sell kits for drum brake axles....

Gidday Chris, I am currently looking for some thing spindles and didn't realise that they were drum only. I would have thought that down grading the brakes from disc to drum was not aloud, but if you are trrying to change them to disc maybe we could look at what shipping would be for some combined items. I would like to get some spindles and discs to suit and maybe shipping might not change musch for more items. Would be cheaper for both of us. PM me if you want to discuss.

Hi baghall, yea there are early and late thing spindles (the early and late take different ball joints, i noticed while shopping).
maybe perhaps the later ones had discs and early had drum?
I should be legally allowed to run drums on the front as the non- stickshift auto pans (manual pans) for 1969 still had drum.
But i figured i don't have spare drums for the front sitting around, and cost of getting them would probably be the same price if not more than just caliper brackets lol.
you have pm (well... in a min, gimme time to type up 🙂 )

Yes Barls
they did..I didn't mention them as I thought no one would notice ..lol
but all beetles & karmann cabriolets sold in the USA all had drum brakes... they also had IRS cv joint rear ends from 1969>
even 1978 beetles had drums...
and all vw things in the USA had drums from what I have read...

I've not heard of the early/late Thing stubs Chris???? Only one Thing ball joint listing in any parts listings that I find.
All things are drums, you would be leagally able to use these (if you wanted to and you had some) as they are a twin leading shoe design like the type 2's & 3's here. This design is way more effestive than the normal beetle brakes.....but ....having said that, Ill be going disc's on mine (as you know).

If the thin g stub axles are the same as the early beetle king and link pin stb axles, then I have a set of plates which will allow you to mount the later model disk brakes straight on. It does require different bearings, but I can supply the wheel bearing numbers with the plates. I have fitted a set (John Sherman copy) to the front of my 65 project and they look just great. It does widen your track marginally (I think about 10mm)
PM me and I will discuss it further with you. They are for sale for $100.

phew! welll that makes it easier for me. i was just getting confused with these listings:

But i just read through the whole second one...
saying it suits all through till thing '74

Thanks Hutcho. I'm not sure if it is the same or not, i couldn't tell ya. i will do some research. Matt was going to make me some brackets though, but i mean, if these suit, then it would be a good template to make a couple sets.

They are ball joint stub axle with Thing specific brake backing plate bolt pattern. Our disc fits straight on, just need to fabricate a caliper mount.

Call Mike at sharpbuilt he sell's brackets to bolt beetle calipers to thing spindles. Will probably need to change your wheel bearings ie. different centre hole sizes. Thing ball joints are thing ball joints no different ones, just dodgy descriptions on websites. I put a set on my buggy see dunebuggyadventures website members buggies section, supasports buggy my avatar is buggr. I would post a link but i cant access the website for some reason.😠
What my garage isn't messy........Well chaos is a form of order isn't it?
