Hey guys,

What do I need to do with the RTA and my insurance once I have changed the engine in my car ??

I'm changing from a 1200 to a 1300 (goes in this week) ... Do i need a blue slip to be redone ? engineers certificate ? Its all new to me so anyone with experience doing this that can shed some light would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers big ears.
No i'm not repainting it.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure you need to get an engineers report. They're a pain in the ass 🙁

Don't quote me on it but I thought you only needed an engineer's certificate if it was larger by a certain amount.

Ah Ben you're right I think. Good point!
In that case it's just a blueslip (which is easy!)
Forgot about that 🙂 Cheers

should be just an adjustment of records which is done by a blue slip station but check with rta to make sure
will cost $24.60

Thanks guys,

I just did a bit of Google trolling , and a couple of times i read threads and postings that said you only need an engineers certificate if its more than 15% larger than the factory fitted engine capacity... I think I should be ok. 🙂

Does this mean you can get away with a 1776 in a later bug (assuming it somes with a 1600cc?)

going from 1200 to 1300 shouldn't be an issue seeing beetles came out with 1300 in the late 60s..
and who can tell by looking at it...

Yeah mines a 58 built in October 57, so I'm in a gray area, I'm not worried about who knows by looking at it, its more the insurance side that was a worry, if I am driving a car on the roads, and its not the engine I said it was, I think my cover would be worthless ... technically. Going by popular opinion, it doesn't seem like I have much to worry about. Will check it out when I get the car back on Friday.

Thanks again.

As Rose said it's just an adjustment of records.

I've had 6 different VW engines in my bug since I've owned it, so it's all too familiar.

Any place that does blue slips can do it.

Do you have any paperwork for the new engine?
that always helps make the process run smoother.

Not sure about paperwork, Adam and Mike from RAW recommended the engine to me, its just been rebuilt, so I am sure there are receipts and paper work floating around, I'll make sure to gather up as much as I can.

Cheers.

You can go to any engine offered in the same model ( not year) without an engineers certificate.
Technicaly you can also go 15% power increase over the most powerful version offered in the same model- but this is not practicable to enforce. Turbo's require engineering regardless.
For your 1300 swap, you'll need a blueslip inspection and a change of details form ( the blue slip guy will have this) then take that to the RTA.
Personally, I'd just leave it untill the rego is due next.

hey Ben, being only a 1300 all you will need is a blue slip to alter the records of the engine number with the rta.... done this a few times and just went through it about a week ago with my SS..... iv hooked in to ur bug and have the new motor in, she was a little tight, but i got her in.... (early bug engine bays are tight with a later motor)🤪 had her started today, but still need to finish off a few things so hopefully by tomorrow arvo she will be ready to go. just to give u a run down, i transferred ur original regulator, generator, coil, dissy cap, rotor and clutch plate from the old 36 ( they were either needed for the conversion or better then what was on the doner engine) had to modify the breastplate tinware and a few other little things.... after everything is adjusted and sorted, ill take her for a test run and call u after that... talk to u tomorrow, cheers adam

Hahaha... "she was a little tight but I got her in"...you're a wordsmith mate, pure class.

That's great news, I was expecting it by friday, but the sooner the better, I had a feeling you would transfer a few of the parts from my old motor since they were only replaced by you guys recently.

I gave shannon's a call this afternoon, they are soo easy going, said no problem at all, put a note against my account to say engine change was happening, all I have to do is let them know the new engine number once its in.no change too my cover what soo ever.
speak to you tomorrow.
