Hey,

help - cant decide? iim looking for new tyres and found these guys in Melbourne (www.taxityres.com.au). They are a wholesale distributor. Prices for the public are really cheap but I haven't heard most of the brands they sell.

Anyone know more about the tyres they sell or used them before? Are they any good?

I called and they said most of the tyres they sell are Chinese. Should I be scared? The guy I spoke with said they last as long as the famous brands and achieve high mileage that's why the taxi drivers buy them.

I normally go with Dunlop or Goodyear. Any advice or recommendations? Or should I just stick with what I know and pay twice the price?

my opinion is that tires and brakes arent something to skimp on. id recommend the marshals if you want to save money. same tire as kymos but half the price.

I have not heard of any of those tyres. I love Sumitomo tyres, they're cheap and grip really nicely. Shop around at your local tyre shops and see what they can do for you. It's possible to get a better tyre than the big names for a lower price. As a guide I pay roughly $100 each for Sumitomo HTR-200s in 195/70R14, fitted and balanced. I have had Kingstars before at $75 each but they didn't grip very well. They were rock hard and lasted for ages though, in fact they've still got nearly all their tread left because I swapped them for something with more grip!

I will be getting some Bridgestone Toranza GR90's . 205 65R 15 @ $130 each. They are going to give me 50 buks fuel voucher too. So over all I think it a good deal.

I just asked for the grippyest tyres they have and something that wont wear in 12 months, with moderate wet grip. They recommended them.

I have SP sport 300E atm, though they are -5% tread left 😂 they still grip 50 fold better than the Kelly tyres my car came with. I dumped those with 80% left on them as they were very dangerous to drive on.

Surprisingly some Chinese tyres aren't too bad.
I'd never buy them new myself but cos I buy so many sets of 2nd hand rims I've had a few with chinese tyres.

The set on the front of the bug currently have surprised the crap out of me, they were almost on the wear blocks when I bought them over a year ago and after 10,000kms they've hardly worn and my bug hasnt had a professional wheel alignment in 9 years, I do all my own alignments so its not perfect, they seem to hang on pretty well in the wet too, just hate directional tyres though.

I used to stick by Bridgestone but I put 4 Yokohama C-drives on the mainstreamer few years back and was very impressed but not worth the $700.

Federals are good value for money too, had plenty of them over the years.

I got a set of Chinese tyres on the front of my Suby, they hang on all right and they don't seem to be wearing to quick, not as good as the Yokohama C Drive's on the Bug but less than half the price.

Just watch out as probably the most renown material to fail from china is rubber.

I have seen with my own eyes in just about every thing with rubber in it made in china, the rubber goes first and normaly is the soul case of a part/item failure.

I did a complete from end rebuild in my VP around may last year. Everything! was replaced in the steering ,suspension and brakes.

All was quality parts, not cheap as I forked up good money for all parts. Well gradually the brakes go worse and worse till I took it apart on the week end.

Yep Chinese rubber had cause the problem. Bastards!😬 What I thought was good part I was sold a Chinese knock off. the content of the front hubs leaked out and caked my brakes in grease.

Bought replacement aftermarket hub seal again and this time locally and it was a different rubber and slightly different design which was the trusted brand that the local mechanic used for 20 years and never had a problem.

Also I noticed on my lower ball joints the boot has completely disintegrated as if it were 50 years old. F**K! more Chinese rubber. They were brand new! may last year with only 10K on them 😬

So far all the rest looks perfect.

Seriously any thing rubber made in china can and probably will compromise safely.

This is not just cars, I have seen as this happen in engineering and electronics industry as well.

I'm currently using NanKangs on my golf and am pleasantly surprised, previously I had pirelli's, and before that michelins.
They grip quite well, comparable to the pirelli's. Plus they are quiet also, similar to the michelins. Plus they side profile looks pretty good.
Can't comment on the longevity as I've only had them for 8 months, but done over 25k so far.

Recently got 2 new nankangs for my beetle as well and they are alright too.
Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

my sp Sport 300E's were 70% tread when I bought my mags and are like -5% that's less than roadworthy.

They wore down to that in about 10k lol 🤪. But even with no tread left they are still soft and grip well.
