As to "more interesting than a beetle", well.... that's an age old argument really.
Far as I know the UK and Aus ones would be virtually identical as far as chrome trim etc... possibly that our models would be 1 or 2 years behind in getting updates is about the only diff I think.
After much searching, it looks like the model I want is a German import 1964-65. Maybe there just isn't any left here! Looking at the UK site again I find that the rear view of the car has 1500S Variant on it. The ones generally in the UK would be these although the one there was imported back to the UK a couple of years ago according to the writings. The ones made here do look a little lean on the trim areas compared to this one.
Anyone know if there is a real live one here around NSW to have a look at?
The cutaway from elsewhere on here indicates there was a sedan as well with the same inside and outside trim.

The UK vs Australian type 3's from 64 to 68 are completely different in regard to trim specifications.
Australia was making its own type 3's by 1964 so there was no need to fully import the German spec ones, which is why there are only a handful of German imports around. There is a blue 65 1500S in NSW owned by "1500S" on here.
That cut-away picture is from a German 1964/5 model, the sedans and squarebacks had similar specifications.
Good luck finding an original German import, you'll need it
Driving along Pennant Hills Road last Thursday I sighted a nice old VW Variant (see below pic) and it jogged the memory to have sniff here after a long break due to other interests. When I see someone searching for a particular model Type 3 I tend to take a bit of notice when it turns out to be a 1500S.
Other than the Sea Blue one which was on ebay a couple of years ago which incidently was too rusty to do much with and it is now in bits in Adelaide none have surfaced. The only other one was on a farm somewhere outside Young, NSW (see some pics) . That was around 1998 and was owned by some fellow called Marco who was at Nicks Fyshwick VW in those days. Is it still around? Who knows.
Without going through all of the posts and nitpicking on points of correctness this is how I see it.
What is a 1500S? As someone said, the 1500S was only an upmarket model of the 1500. The 1500 wasn't bad for interior stuff with 4 piece door trims, 3 piece rear quarters, wrap around dash. Exterior had the side parkers and bumper overriders but little else in the shiny bit department. The rear quarters were popouts on all 1500 sedans with a couple of changes on sealing to the body.
1964 (well August 1963) saw the release of the 1500S with a few more bright bits on the outside: bonnet trim, wide front indicators, long reflectors, the S badge on numberplate light, extended tail light lenses and waste line trim. The side parkers were lowered to this line.
The inside retained the door and quarter trims and wrap around dash and added a centre armrest to the rear seat back on the sedan. All 1500S vehicles had popout rear quarter windows.
The standard engine was the 1500 8.5:1 CR twin carb engine with the 7.8:1 M249 option for dud petrol.
1965 (August 1964) , the Australian Twin S was released. This was basically our 1500N with twin carbs. There was a choice of 3 colours in the new seat covering material for that year and a white turret. None of that 1500S trim was on the Twin S.
NOW. Did the Twin S have popout rear quarters from the factory? Unlikely even as a special order. The holes were in the B pillar but no hinges. Note that these would have to have been in there when the pillar is assembled and even at dealer level, how many owners would have liked anything cut to add them. Likewise, there were no latch nuts in the C pillar.
Was there an 8.5:1 CR engine fitted at the factory? Another unlikely although there would have been spares from the 1500S by this time. Most likely begged by the owner at dealer level but was discouraged due to heat problems here in Australia.
Was there any Twin S cars with S & P seat trim. Most likely not from the factory but hard to tell as carbs were available to change a standard 1964 0r 1965 1500N to engine specs of the Twin S. Have they been seen? Yes. Two of them were around Blacktown. I owned one of them and Russel Gabriel from Seven Hills had the other one. Plenty were being changed to get rid of that horrible single carb plus the bolt on boost in power was handy.
Now Old Rusty, the crunch line. I hope you find your dream. It's a pity that Variant escaped from Australia but at least it gave you a search option. If that one at Young is still there it would hopefully be in a condition for restoration. Other than that, I can't help with a lead. Otherwise, you will be down to finding a good 1500N as suggested elsewhere and spending time to convert it to 1500S specs which of course is getting harder, especially the interior. There just isn't much around now.
Just for reference, how many 1500S sedans are left in Australia? Someone said maybe five. Reality has it less. There are two known in running condition, one in Adelaide and one here in Sydney area. The one here is the only one known to be still road registered.
What do they drive like? Like a bloody 47 year old VW 1500S with around 40,000 miles on the clock.
Good luck with the search and if you turn out to be in the Sydney area, you (or anyone else) are welcome to come and have a look at it or even have a drive! It's actually done 15km since Nambucca last year!
