Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a gloss black paint that is quite durable/thick? Preferably brush on over pretty much anything... I have wire brushed and got all the crud off and it's relitavley clean. Something that has some sort of self leveling qualities???

POR 15 does all that so long as You follow instructions

the paint used on chassis goes rock hard ...

levels out great... looks like its sprayed on... a liitle bit goes a long way... stops rust too...

but fades in the SUN as its not UV stable..

POR 15 also sell paint that can be used to paint cars...

I also just checked out rust bullet and there product BLACKSHELL.... It seems like a good option as the blackshell product doesnt seem to require the same preperation (marineclean, metal ready) as the POR15, does anyone have any examples of any of these products? And any idea how much of this BLACKSHELL would be required??

Mick.

por15 is expensive as hell but for what it does its well worth it. The "chassis black" is the gloss top coat that goes on top of the por15 rust preventative paint.

That paint is UV stable but is recommended to be sprayed on top of the regular por15 rather than painted. you could also try "hard nose" which is their 2 pak ultra hard and durable paint. Its like HOLY SHIT good, so much its hard to comprehend how good it is, very expensive though😁

So, the por15 you see most people putting on here and getting that gloss black finish is not the process of : marine clean,Metal ready, Por15 black? And being UV stable is not really an issue as its under the car and on the floor. Not looking for a show car finish, just glossy, presentable and easy to paint on. Will be brushing on too.

POR15 is good, but exxy.

I like RustGuard myself... brushes on pretty well, and a lot simpler on the prep. Good stuff for pans and beams.

Whats rust guard worth Dave? This paint thing has me totally confused! I just want a durable paint that i can brush on as, well you have seen where i'm building the car.... Doesn't have to be a mirror finish just average. As long as it dont scratch off and will stick. Did you do your floor with it??

Yeah, Bunnings has for about $20 for a 1 liter tin I think, or $60'ish for 4 liters.

Done my trailer with their hammertone, and my front beam is done with just the gloss black epoxy. Both have come up great for the limited prep I gave 'em.

If you go nuts with a screwdriver or wire brush it'll come off eventually, but it's fine for normal wear and tear.

My floor was done with just sound deadening matt paint which isn't wearing so great in the cabin, so when I fix my roundtoit it'll be redone with RustGuard.

I keep banging on about KBS coatings, but only cause I'm happy with how it has held up so far. I got a 1lt chassis black kit for $90 at my local paint shop. That included the cleaning agent, the rust proofing solvent and the litre of paint.

I slapped it on while on my back under the car with the pan 10mm from my nose. Got it up on the hoist and it looks quite good.

Just wear gloves, as it stains the skin.

Was the litre enough to do all of the pan or just underneath?

Yeah, the whitknight option is very appealing because of the price... does anyone have any photographic examples of whiteknight rustguard brushed on a floorpan??

I did a floorpan with about a litre, maybe a touch more, thinned down slightly, entire floorpan top and bottom, pan head and rear end, the whole lot, with the KBS coating. Cheap and great, but does fade in the light, i dont think it affects the performance of the product though. Bout $60 for a litre i think.

Just so you all know, POR15 is very good, but it's not resistant to brake fluid.

don't ask me how I know... 🙁

BTW, I've had reasonable success with killrust too. I think any of the epoxy/rust curing paints will work well if the prep is good and lets face it, the prep is not that hard, just laborious.

Yeah, I put 3 coats top and bottom of the pan. Ended up buying another can and doing my brake drums, pedals, steering column and anything I could reach with a brush that was out of sight and needed protection. I also did the fuel tank after lining it with their tank sealer. I've seen one fella use it as an undercoat on their bodywork too.
Just try and use the whole can as it dries rock hard in a few weeks.
