Looked at a bug today. Went through and checked all the numbers, when I got to the engine number it had been grinded off.

The owner said the engine had been replaced previously to them buying it and wasn't aware of it.

Will this cause issues in the future if this number is missing?

Yes it will.
Under normal circumstances, there is no reason to grind an engine number off, unless someone is trying hide something. The reasons could be:
misrepresenting the size of an engine.
hiding a stolen engine

Thanks,

I didn't buy the car as I didn't want any hassles with it missing. Just imagined being pulled over by the boys in blue and then having to take the car over to motor reg to get it sorted...

Had it been ground off, or was it just a Type 3 motor converted to upright ???

They had the engine number in a different spot... basically under where the fan shroud sits on an upright motor, and were completely blank in the usual spot.

if it has been ground off its a paperweight. If you ever get pulled up for it there will be questions asked of you and you'll never get it registered with that engine again.

If it has been ground off it would just be a case of getting a stat dec signed and getting police issued engine number.

I went through the same crap when I bought a car with a mystery engine number that didnt match car details or rego papers

Same thing you go through when you fit one of those new mexican crate engines which come with no engine number.

Either that or just get another engine and do an adjustment of records.

as Joel has said about type 3 engines...

One of the locals has a Mexican engine in a Beetle and I don't think it has an engine number...
He was going to get it stamped i think... ??

I thought He was crazy driving around without the engine number ... ???
