Hey everyone
My 76' beetle needs a new steering box because the old one is completely worn. ive been searching on the net alot and ive found a few places that sell reconditioned ones and some places also sell new ones, so my question is Would i be better off buying a brand new Steering Box or a recondioned one?

Any advice is appreciated.

When I recently picked the brain of a well regarded VW mechanic who would rather not be mentioned on this forum, he said...

"The problem with the new Chinese boxes is that some of it is not well made.
So we can modify a new one so it will last or refurbish an old TRW box."

So if you are looking at a new one, check what brand it is. TRW are expensive and very hard to find, but the only sort worth putting in.

I don't trust any new ones they sell now. Is a 76 a super? if so they have different boxes don't they?
The 1976 Beetles were the NON Supers Vlad

but had the IRS rear end ...

similar to My 68 autostick beetle...

I don't know why they changed back???
weren't supers that super??

HI
I'd go for for a reconditioned one...
You will know its made of good western Germany steel and it has been inspected and overhauled...

cheers

😂😂 oh dear.

It was just the factory mixing and matching using up the last of the inventory as they wound down Beetle production.

The bodies were the left over 1300 torsion bar ones and the running gear (AS 1600 twin port and SSP IRS box AT from memory) was left over Lbug.
